We take the laptop with us as we have no tv, but now for some reason after getting back from our 3 week hols (not in the van) I have no sound anymore. It is an HP Pavillion. The device manager says 'no audio devices installed'. It has updated vista and after a lot of struggling I have updated the BIOS. I have googled the problem, it is obvious other people have similar problems and have tried some of the solutions to no avail. I really don't know what I am doing and spome of the answers are way too technical for me. Thought I had cracked it yesterday, got the sound back watched gardeners world, and now this morning having turned it off overnight the sound has gone again! This has happened previously and I thought it was solved yesterday as I had managed to update the BIOS (whatever that is!). I have looked on microsoft for solutions but they say go back to HP as Vista was factory installed, I go to HP none of the solutions work and they say go find an HP technician, where do they live? Am sure it would be cheaper to buy a new lap top than do that! Anyway I would appreciate if anyone out there could help. I don't want to buy a tv really or a new laptop!

Thanks for the sympathy, you made me laugh! The only reason it doesn't get thrown out the window is the cost of the replacement double glazing! Have loads of photos scared to put them on the laptop in case the whole thing goes toes up (being polite).

Anything gadgety scares the life out of me:scared: .......the only thing we have in the van is a little portable radio, now I know how to swithch that on . Himbenny says we should update our phones, as we both have pre-historic phones they are that old they are made of rock, but he thinks we should get proper phones so we can get internet access. How posh are we ?? running water and posh phones ??:lol-053:

Hi there,

I am a computer technician and could help you but am about to go away for a few days on a wildcamping trip. Just quickly though, one shouldn't mess with the bios because this can end up rendering your pc useless if you dont know what u are doing. Have a look under control panel and the system hardware settings to see whether there is any yellow or red ! mark. This will be the 1st indicator advising that you have lost your drivers for the soundcard. Try reinstalling the drivers if this is the case. You can also reboot your pc and as it does so press F8. If this doesn't work then you can try a system restore, which restores your pc to a state that it last was working properly.

Sorry, must rush now as we are leaving in a few minutes. Hope this helps for now.

Of course I have given this advice not knowing what operating system you are running. If in doubt don't mess with important settings as this can cause more problems than you need.

Good luck for now but let me know if you don't get it sorted.

She says she's on Vista which came with the PC so she probably wont have drivers available unless it came with a back up disc or she made one. Could try looking at the device manager and trying to download the sound drivers from the net.

BIOS = Basic Input Output System by the way... it's like the manual your computer looks at first when it starts up (not that this really helps with the problem!) but I agree changing it can turn your PC into a brick if you are not careful.

Oh. I'm getting really scared now! I did make recovery discs when I first got the computer but would have no idea how to use them. When I go into device manager there is no 'sound' listed. When I go into 'sound' in control panel it says 'no audio devices are installed'. Have looked on the net but no idea which device should be on the computer. Have gone back to a restore [oint where it worked and the sond comes back, as soon as I turn the computer off and on again, it disappears. As for the BIOS the HP healthcheck thingy shows it as an alert and that it needs updating. the computer wouldn't do it so I downloaded from HP site. This cured the problem until I switched the computer off again!

Thanks for the reply, hope you have a lovely trip and find somewhere that isn't all wet & soggy! Looked under control panel and can't find system hardware settings. Don't know what drivers I need to reinstalll, and if I press F8, then what? Appreciate you are away and won't be answering this!
All the best
Sue

I know what you are going through. It's worse than waiting for er in doors to drop the sprog.
I am absolutely useless with these things and find computer people worst still. They say "Oh all you have to do is this" as their fingers fly over the keys, and "there easy aint it?" Oh no it isn't. I am still none the wiser after being shown several times. So when the computer bloke quoted over a ton to repair mine last week, my daughter bought a new Acer Aspire on special offer from Tesco at 265. That's what I like. The only thing wrong with this one is that it has no refresh button to click on. so I don't know how to refress the page untill my daughter gets home next week. LOL:mad1:

You have to laugh, don't you?!! It's good to know I am not the only total div out there. I would put some clever little gizmo thingies on here but not clever enough! And what are those little green rectangles all about that are under our names? Hope to meet up with you someday.

OK this happens often because the sound drivers can get corrupted. You can go into Device Manager, find the sound driver, delete it and reboot your computer. I know it all sounds scary if you haven't done it before but it works and is what HP support will tell you if you can ever get hold of someone. Good luck!

Thanks for taking the trouble to answer but...
1 There is no sound driver in device manager
2 how do you reboot the computer?!!
3 HP support don't seem to want to know they tell me to find an HP technician (unfortunately I purhased laptop in USA and the UK site will not get involved)

1. OK well you must have a sound driver appropriate to your system so it you are sure it is missing you need to Google for and download one unless you have the original system disc with the computer (ie when you bought it). Go to the HP support download site and search for sound driver for your specific model. Download and install it.

2. Rebooting is just a fancy way of saying restart from being completely switched off.

3. I had the same problem a while back. I eventually contacted HP in USA and they sorted it out and arranged for the laptop to be collected/returned after a hardware fix (ironically sorted out in UK).

This may well not work, but worth a try at least:
Go to Control Panel, then sound and audio devices and check that a device is selected, if not there may be a drop down menu with a device to apply.
In answer to you question 2, rebooting is simply restearting. (ps I am not an expert!)

It may be worth checking the settings in the BIOS if it is implicated. There is usually a F key you can press or hold down during start up (look in the manual) or check the directions on screen when it first turns on. It may say something like press "Esc or Alt F7" to enter BIOS settings. Scroll through the BIOS options and see if it says anything about sound card or sound preferences anywhere.

This is not a good solution unfortunately as it simply reinstalls a driver which is probably defective. The best way is to DELETE any sound driver then reboot the machine and windows automatically searches for the correct driver (from the internet).

In this case the driver is missing altogether so it is necessary to download it from HP.

OK, hands up anyone who's actually reinstalled a driver and got the sound working again .............. Hmm, thought so.

yes my hand is up i have built all my own pc from scratchand reinstalled all software ok do have problem with my pc whyich means i nead to reload my pc operating system but it is running at the moment and has been for ages ,the problem is caised by a conflict with the raid motherboard and the raid card in pcie slot conflicting so need to reload with out any raid setup then reintroduce the raid card first then instal the mother board raid secondly and use different driver s for each raid setup and stop it trying to use newer drivers for the raid card but use newer drivers for the onboard raid setup then it a case of installing 8 hhard disk drives in right order {ok iknow ican move the letters around but wish to keep them as they are named } then iwant to triple boot with win7 wins xp and thendo a linux partion to give me something to playaround with for all those who havent understood a word of what i on about dont worry be happy that your pc is working ps all the stuff iwork with is out of the ark so does need some t lc and a swift kick now and again

I have built several PC's from scratch and installed numerous OS's and got numerous sound cards, modems and printers working for both myself and others.

However I have not had much trouble with sound card drivers since windows ME. XP, Vista and 7 have been much more plug and play for me. The sound system works on similar principles though. Some hardware on a card or the motherboard and some software (drivers) to go with it.
