lack power in my engine

Hi all,
As I have mentioned before, I have a Talbot express it is the 2.5 diesel, but it really lacks power especially on hills. Is there any kind of gizzmo that could be fitted i.e power a valve or something that could help increase the power?

Thanks again

is it the non turbo citreon engine with the pump at the back

Look into adding acetone to your diesel. Just google it.

Hi marty, I have the same engine on my Hymer but its got the turbo, had it tuned by TB Turbo in lancaster and it made a hell of a difference, if you can get yours tuned by a diesel specialist its well worth it, because it increases fuel consumption as well, mine cost £300.

Hi, Yes the fuel pump is at the rear of the engine between the engine and the bulk head on the drivers side.

thanks

all you can do is make sure that you are getting full throttle and up the fueling but if you go to far it will smoke .do not adjust the max throttle stop

Hi and thanks for your reply. When travelling on the flat or down hill i will do 60/75 mph ..it is just the hills. I take it that it is a geneneral problem ?

You maybe able to solve some of your hill climbing problems by changing your driving style.

The high torque rise diesel motors are intended to be driven differently to petrol and the old high revving 2 stroke diesels eg;

On uphills let the engine lug down to maximum torque rpm, then skip shift down ie 5th to 3rd, you need to increase rpm upto somewhere close to maximum hp to engage the gear. Having the engine producing max hp will maintain its momentum uphill.

You just have to pick the hills, sometimes a single downshift is fine.

You'll need to look at an engine graph, or if you have a tacho with a amber/green/red zone marked you'll soon get the feel for it - the lower end of the green will be max torque and the red will be max hp.

You can also skip shift going up the gearbox if you have help from a downhill slope.

ok? I have been driving for nearly twenty years..so i think i am driving correctly? As soon as the vehicle hits a slope it almost starts to die straight away?

It really is mainly a case of heavy motorhome / low powered engine syndrome. However a couple of things that may help a little.

1) Try an injector cleaner

2) Check that your air filter is not restricted.

3) It is possible that your maximum FUEL (not revs) screw has been adjusted to reduce smoke for the M.O.T. An older engine like this would really need to be set quite close to the limit (even after a good service) to get the maximum pulling power.

Hi Marty how long have you been driving a motorhome? Two things will make it completely different to a car, one the weight (it will almost certainly be at near to full weight for the chassis) and the second if you have an overcab is wind resistance, both of these will sap the power from your engine, the only things you can do is make sure you are getting the most out of the engine by having it checked out by a specialist and adapting your driving style. Changing down and increasing the revs will help but you have to do it at the right time.

As has been said before, make sure the air filter is clean. If its grubby replace it.
On my last van (VW T4 2.4d) a clean filter and turning up the pump a bit helped a lot :)

hi all!!!!! i've just altered my filter box in my ldv to a k&n sports filter, more to create room for my smaller veg. tank than for power! but i can honestly vow that the filter alone has increased the torque and pick up of my tranny engine!it still won't do more than 70mph downhill with an artic pushing it but along the flat and hills its got a new breath of (excuse the pun) fresh air. i had two weeks previously fully serviced engine tooinc cam belt,so i know my engine is tiptop, still can't believe the difference the k&n as made!!!:)

Thanks, does anyone know if you cn get a k&n for an old Talbot?

I have recently fitted a new air filter. I will also try the fuel injection cleaner. Thanks again everyone for your help. will keep you informed.
