Keep getting air in my Hymer water system???

Hello folks!

strange problem - overnight our Hymer B584 water system gets air in it . In the mornings we have to bleed the taps / toilet as if we have just filled it. Lots of spluttering till water bleeds thro'. Affects cold & hot systems. I have had every cupboard apart to check all hose connections to taps for leaks - none. Checked every connection from tank to boiler, looked for leaks underneath - none. We don't lose water - just gain air in system! Very baffling. Could it be the pump allowing water to drain back in? I am stuck for ideas - none of the repair people near me can look at it until end of April, and we are on the tunnel 8th april. Suggestions appreciated.:confused:
 
Depending on your pump/tap combination it could be several things.

Do you know if you have pressure sensitive pump or electric taps?

It could be that the water is draining back to the tank. I would think that you have a submersible pump in the tank itself and the non return valve is passing. It could be due to the extreme winter weather. It could also be a cracked body on the pump.

When I picked up my present van from the dealer, I had the same problem. They just fitted a new pump but you might not have to do that.

Can,t really help much because I don't know much about Hymers but in your circumstances with an imminent trip organised I would be tempted to try a pump change. If it isn't that you won't have spent a fortune, probably less than taking it to workshop, and if you keeping the van for a few years a spare pump is not a bad thing to have. Enjoy your trip when you go.

thanks for the input - it is a submersible pump that is activated by microswitches on the taps. I will whip it out tonight and investigate. I have lots of manuals and paperwork for the van - pump leaflet is for the wrong style pump!

Sounds like a faulty non-return valve to me. It might be part of the pump or fitted in-line just after the pump.

Look at the taps first, any weeping will indicate a leak especially around the barbs where the hose connects.

The tap washers can also be a problem - but are almost always impossible to replace without doing some damage to the top of the taps - then sourcing the washers can be a drama as well.

A simple test to check the taps is to put a baloon onto the spouts, fill with water and then see if the water gets siphoned back into the tank - good indication that the washers are cactus.
 
I'll put my money on the connection from the pump into the pipework. On mine there's a push fit connection between the the pump & the pipework that sandwitches the access hatch for the pump inbetween. This joint is "sealed" by an "o" ring. Any leaks here will admit air & this will be pumped into the potable water system as soon as the pump is started.

I noticed a difference in the amount of air getting into my water after removing the pump. I've never managed to get it completely airtight.
