Still can't sleep, even though I have just got back from a 500 ish mile stint behind the wheel.
Just got back from a week away on holiday to Germany.
We took our time and stayed on Aires, car parks and a minicipal in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, visiting Brugge, Arnhem and Bueckeburg Castle, in sub zero temperatures (just) in our warm 'van.

With our van still not been sorted under warranty (waiting for parts) we set off for Germany with intermittent fridge, central locking and habitation electrics control panel.
The problems did not end there when we came across the queue for the Channel Tunnel that extended onto the motorway. This meant that we missed our train time, but eventually caught a later one.
This all vanished into insignificance when the engine temperature gauge hit the 'bleedin hot' mark and we pulled into a Belgian motorway layby around an hour away from getting off the train in Calais. With all our 'good' luck I was wondering if it would be best to turn round and head back home.
Fearing the worst, and it being 'late o'clock' we 'overnighted' til the morning, where with a clear head and daylight I was able to work out that it was the gauge that was at fault and not an overheating engine!:cool1:

We continued on to Brugge, where we hoped to park for the day near the 22 Euro Aire, but ended up parked next to the canal that surrounds the city and walked in, bought chocolate, toured round the canal on a boat and generally had a good time for a few hours before we drove out of Brugge to find an overnight spot near Arnhem.
Again we were lucky to find a parking spot near to 'a bridge too far', and visited a nearby small museum of information about the bridge and the soldiers and locals during that time.
The whole idea of the trip was to visit family in Germany, so the next leg took us to a Stellplatz right next to Bueckeburg Castle, five Euros a night and two Euros for 24hrs of 'lecky. A couple of days with my daughters family and then to Nienburg to visit the 'outlaws', where we had a warm welcome and an overnight stay on their farm.
The following day we set off to find a large shopping precinct so we could load up with my favourite German goodies, Curry ketchup!!! being one of them.;) Afterwards we continued back towards the coast and eventually found a French Municipal camp site just outside Maubeuge and stayed for a further two nights.
On the Friday we made our way back to Calais and an early train back to Folkstone so we could visit family who live in Sittingbourne Kent.
Have yet to tally fuel cost, but considering the way I have been driving, I don't expect great things from the mpg...

After calculating our mpg, it seems we have been getting about an average of 22mpg during our 1200 mile trip! :scared:
Not impressed, but inevitable when one drives a 'brick'.
The beauty of having a 'garage' in the 'van is the purchasing possibilities to be had!
So we always try to pick up a 'haul' of important German goodies.
Anyone else got a like for German Curry Ketchup? :p

Our shopping haul.
The end of our one hour queue to get on the train!
View inside the train.
Chris buying Belgian chocolate in Brugge...if only you could have seen her little face light up when she saw all the chocolate!!

If only I could..

I really do admire your bravery and envy you your trip, hope to do the same before I get to old. I have a nine year old dog which is stopping me from venturing over the channel.
I know many on here have animals too and that don’t stop them but I don’t want to take him with me and I don’t have anyone to look after him while away.
My two children despite having pets themselves at sometime don’t want him so I’m stuck until he passes over to that big dog kennel in the sky…
I’m a wild camper stopping wherever I can without causing problems for anyone so I reckon when I can do that trip I should find it easy and a lot less hassle as it can be in this god forsaken Motor Home unfriendly country..
Maybe just maybe when we do go I might not come back..

Looks like a good trip, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Just makes me envious just looking at the pictures.
I can't wait until later in the year when we can get over there and have our own adventure.
Thanks for the post.

we are going over end of May to Germany for 3 weeks, Mozel river/black forest/romantic road cant wait, taking our 3 springers with us they had a great time in France last year. Beemer those sausages i would die for love them.

Hello Beemer, I plan to travel through Germany to Austria next summer and this will be my first jaunt. I'm trying to gather as much info as possible about stellplatz and other areas I can park up overnight. I will be travelling in a converted people carrier so will still be classed as a car. Please could you give this little beginner some more info on places I can stay for free/cheap throughout Germany please?

Thanking you muchly :)

We spent June travelling down the Rhine and the Mosel. The Rhine is worth doing once but the Mosel is an area I would go back to over and over again. If you are not going in hight season I would not book anywhere. We worked our way down from Koblenz to Nancy stopping in Stelplatz in Germany and municipals in France. There is a Stelplatz in nearly every village along the Mosel. Just stop when you fancy and if you don't like anything about the place there will be another a couple of miles further along the road. Some are run by local businesses some by communities and very from basic car parks to almost having campsite facilities. Prices vary from free to 11 Euros, all are usually in lovely locations next to the river. Piesport is a nice Stelplatz but very popular, it was the only one that was full when we were there. Most vans looked like they were there for a long stay. Stelplatz (IMO) are much better than your average French Aire.

Don't use a sat nav just keep to the riverside road.

If you don't need a lot of sleep the middle Rhine is worth doing but stopping places are not so numerous as on the Mosel.

We found German campsites generally to be very expensive and if using ACSI card not very good.

Oh it looks so good - hopefully next year we will be doing the same. Thanks for the info | found it fascinating. :camper:

re "overheating engine"

I had loads of similar problems with engine temp climbing up into the RED, battery not charging, the instrument cluster freezing up or shutting off completely.

Turned out that the ground strap and all the points on the chassis are corroded. I added an additional ground strap directly from the alternator housing/bracket to the chassis ground point under the battery.

Not one problems since.

PS had a giggle when I saw the picture of your goodies lined up. We do the same when we come home from a trip to Germany

PSS you really must like your Ketchup, what is the use by date on these???

Germany is the place to go, been going there for 30+ years, by far the Mosel is the best place in summer and the Xmas markts in Dec are superb, if passing or visiting the black forest try staying at Herrenhalb near Baden-Baden cost's just 10Euro's per night and you get a free all day bus pass for two adults ... Bargain !
If anyone needs a good route in Germany drop me a PM, glad to help and "NO" I don't work for the German tourist board :)
Were back over there for the Xmas markts on the 14th Dec.

Be very careful who you share that information with  - the ex-Forces/Forces Brats groups (I'm a member of a couple of them) on Fb are full of people lusting after curry ketchup, bratties, apfelkorn, beers-they-used to-get legless-on, etc, etc, and so you could be in serious danger of a hijack situation

Sounds a great place to go and just what we're looking for.

Is that the place on page 610 in Camperstop Europe 2013 called Bad Herrenalb or am I completely lost?

Either way, could you please post your route here in the thread so that we can all read it easily?

Thanks in advance for your help.
