Jura Ferry

Hi

First time on the forum.

We are planneing a trip to the western islands next year and will be using Calmac for most of the crossings.
There is a small ferry from Islay to Jura that is run independently and is the only way on to the island for vehicles. I am worried that our Geist Phantom which has a fairly long overhang may ground judging by some comments on the site. Photographs of the Ferry at Port Feolin are hard to interpret. We have never had any difficulty with European and Scandinavian ferries.

Has anyone any experience of taking a largeish mothorhome on this route?

:newhere:

Just looked at pics on Ports.org.uk / Introduction, and at ones of your van. I think you'll be ok, but it could depend on the water level in the channel at the time of crossing.
If in doubt, park at Port Askaig, and take the bikes across.

You will be fine as long as you phone ahead ( there numbers on the website) and make sure it's not a low tide sailing, there are plenty of vehicles do that crossing with a much larger over hang

Overhang

my overhang is protected by a metal bumper/towing bar - when we used Jura it did ground as such but I know to keep on driving and it is fine - the ferry on Jura can aslo land on the rough beach side and that has less of a slope - the skipper landed us there - it was something like a dunkirk landing....

Funny how you come across appropriate posts when searching for "Islay" on the forum. :) I've just read a post about getting stuck on Islay - same thing almost happened to me in my L4H3 Boxer, first time ever, on the island.

Now this re. ferry and overhang - on Wednesday we saw a motorhome with long overhang driving off the ferry on Colonsay - *crunch* - cue a very worried driver hold up traffic and gesticulating unhappily at the ferry workers. I hope it wasn't too much of a crack in his bottom (as it were).
