Hubby would like some advice if anyone can help pleeeeeeaaaaaaaseeee :bow:
We had a dodgy mechanic over a few weeks ago who left us with a problem of leaking oil (explained in a previous thread). We need to know what size spanner/key is the sump plug for a renault trafic rapport 1989:idea:. We are also looking out for a manual if anyone has one or a copy:bow: .....willing to pay of course.

Its a long time since I got under an engine but they used to be a special square key on many sumps. They where freely available at motor factors. It had multiple heads so covered most sizes.

Just get underneath the vehicle and have a look to see what you have got fitted on your model. If you are going for DIY, you will have to know where it is anyway. The sump plug is on the lowest point underneath the sump which is the lightweight casing attached underneath the engine. If it's a hex nut you can get a socket, ring spanner, or adjustable on there. Measure the dimension across the flats and ask at an accessories shop what size spanner you need. If it's a key type take the shape and dims and do the same. Plasterscine may help if you're not confident at measuring. Take an impression and go down to your tool shop for advice.
 
I have got a renault master manual, got it off amazon, I don't know if it's any good as I'm out the uk at the moment and ordered it just before I left, I will have a look and if it's any good I can scan it and send you a disc with it on if you want then you just print out the pages you want.

if you go to any halfords or any good motor dicount shop with the van ,someone there will help you . another thing on many sump plugs renault ,peugeot and the like there is a copper washer, available from the main dealers ,this should be changed every time you loosen the sump plug to drain the oil ,if not you will get the chance of an oil leak . we all know that buying bits at halfords is not the cheapest place ,but they are pretty good at advice .as i have said before simple maintainance and a service is not hard at all ,and is well within the scope of the owner . and a half decent set of tools wont cost a lot
 
Did you work out whether the leak is coming from the sump plug or the oil filter.

Drip every once in a while when the engine is not running usually points to the plug.
Drips when the engine is running is more likely to be the filter needing a bit more tightening.

Glad to help, I've gotten loads of advice since jouning, so thought I would repay the good deeds and advice I have received. Thats one of the reasons I joined because of the wealth of knowlage that is out there just waiting to be tapped into.

its not the fact they dont replace the sump plug without the washer ,more to the point they use the same one . now you might get away with it not leaking once but they are meant to be replaced every time you do an oil change ,wouldent care there only pennies . when i was a mechanic i had a box with different sized one in so i always had one on hand . also when you change an oil filter always smear a film of oil on the rubber seal ,this helps with the sealing of the rubber ring on the filter against the filter housing ,saves any leaks that may occure . ps if the oil filter canister screws or hangs below the filter housing ,fill the filter with new oil saves that second or two that takes the pump to fill it so leaving the engine without oil pressure for a second or two .

copper washers can be re-used but they need annealing.hold over a gas flame[not with fingers!] till red hot and put into cold water. when they're tightened they go hard,this process softens them again
 
the ones used on sump plugs are crush washers as you tighten the sump plug the washer crushes to form a tight seal .or they used to fit them on the older models i am going back late 80s early 90s
 
Some sump washers have a rubber inner which wears away. They cant be re-used. Best to replace with the same kind but you might only find what type is on when you take it off. You`ll have to buy a handful of different sizes and types from the motor factor but at least you`ll be prepared for the next time.

I bet he did replace the washer - then screwed it up as tight as he could. This flattens it and lets it leak.

Correct way to refit is to tighten up finger-tight only, then one quarter turn with the spanner. Have had this happen couple of times and now make sure I tell anybody who works on my motors the same, at the risk of being called a knowall. At least it keeps the driveway clean!
 
I have had a look at the Manual I have now that I'm home and it only covers the Renault Master diesel model.

I can still send you a copy if you think it will help.:sad:
