which is best and or :wave:more available blue bottle butane or red bottle propane
 
They are both pretty much as available as each other, although the 6-7kg seem to be the ones that sites have the most of.

I would just say that if you're going to use quite a bit, which many MHs do - I can really recommend installing a refillable bottle with an external filler point, the gas is less than half the price.

My first post on here, so I hope I got it right!
 
depends where your going and what temp it is, apparently. blue calor is said to have problems sometimes in colder climes, where as red propane is better at lower temps.

I dont do europe or skiing etc, but i do use propane and dont bother changing, but i only do uk touring.

Both types are readily available especially Calor, Propane [ red bottle ] is better for use in very cold circumstances as it will still turn to gas from liquid .

Sorry that is incorrect, Butane burns hotter, [ is more calorific ] that is why it is regulated at 28 millibars .Propane is regulated at 37 millibars.
 
i would say,if you stay in temperate climes,butane regulators are simpler to change and i find propane regulators a pain in the bum. i use butane in my van and propane in the house

Red or Blue??

If you're crossing the Channel you cant get Calor!

Simple.

Calor only sell gas in UK.

Blue bottles are available all over Europe in garages and supermarkets, but its expensive!

If you're going to travel in Europe you need to get a refillable system (Gaslow, Gas-It etc) and perhaps carry a full calor as a back-up.
 
As stated, the advantage of propane is that it boils at a lower temperature and you can use it below 0 deg C. The advantage of butane is that it is denser so you get more gas out of the same size bottle - 7kg instead of 6kg. You do pay more for the extra butane, though - £21.49 v £19.99 from Calor. The difference in the regulator pressures doesn't affect the amount of gas coming out, the gases have different vapour pressures so propane has to be regulated at a higher pressure. Propane has a slightly higher calorific value, about 2%

What gas is used in the refillable LPG? is it a blend or just propane or something else completely?
 
hi depends what country you are in here in uk its propane .but as you go south they add butane . some places add pentane as well. but it all works . but a southern mix used in northern europe in winter might not create gas ,just stay as a liquid.
remember all bottles are refillable .or they wouldnt want them on exchange.

How can you do that? I use 47kg propane cylinders for gas cutting to be able to fill a small cylinder would be really handy ( and cheap). Is there a venting bit of kit available, or do you just connect one to the other and let the pressure equalise?

I discovered this so use the red bottles all year round. They work in the cold too whereas the blue ones pack in. So the kettle boils faster with propane basically :)

Butane has a calorific value of 3200 btu per 1 cubic feet
Propane is 2500 btu per 1,cubic feet.


Butane generates a max flame temperature of 1996 degrees. Celsius propane a mere 1980.

The boiling point of propane at atmospheric pressiure is minus
42 butane minus 2 which makes propane better for winter use.

Size of cylinders are down to take off rate which is all down to demand on the system and is a seperate issue

30mbar is the current standard for both butane and propane
I have 28/30/37/50 ...and they all work fine with both butane and propane on my appliances

in france it is currently cheaper to buy in bottles than from the lpg pump [ which is propane ] , and the price of bottles is now very low , last one I bought cost €1 [ energas from intermarche ] although €5 is the price on their website
