Italian lakes, May June and maybe Venice

As usual I am spending the winter trip planning for next summer. I've done the Italian lake before several times but not for some years and we always seemed to end up there in the height of summer. This is going back at least ten years now and after last summer in the French Alps and Pyrenees its clear everywhere has got busier so my thinking is to avoid the lakes in the peak season.

My thoughts are early May to mid to late June. From memory Sostas are thin on the ground and a bit naff but it should be ACSI season so could maybe make use of that. What I am looking for is thoughts on the best places to stay at any of the lakes be they sites, Sostas or wild camping. What are peoples experiences of the Weather there May-June? Weather history shows it should be quite pleasant if a little showery in May.

Venice is a tricky one as I have dodgy knees and can't walk too far. However my thoughts were to stay around Jesolo area near the Venice ferry and use the scooter to get to that and the various water buses and just do what I can. St Marks square etc. Not been since I went as a child on a school trip in the late 70s. Mrs D has never been and always wanted to go.

My rough plan was Lake Orta, Maggiore, Laguna, Como, Iseo, Garda, Venice.

Any thoughts or recommendations welcome.

Was looking at Venice myself .
Guiliano seems best site location wise . 3 minutes walk to ferry .
Also did school trip there , early 60s .
Last time I was there (camping) and was one of those coach/camping holidays . Stayed at camping Ca Savio . Nice site , probably pricy . Bus and ferry into Venice

Thanks. I had a quick look and there are three ACSI sites on that Jesolo sticky out bit. Getting to the ferry is not a problem as we have the bike. The main issue there will be that I can't take the bike into Venice so there will be some walking to do although I think you can see a lot of it by boat.

Everything flat in Venice. As I remember main sites pretty close to each other ?
Boat trip definitely. Nice and romantic !

We've stayed at Peschiera Del Garda. It's handy for day trips to Venice and Milan, as it's on the mainline and is about an hour from both.

Thanks. I hadn't considered taking a train in. However I quite fancy Jesolo as it will be a trip down memory lane for me. We had a fantastic school trip there which I thoroughly enjoyed probably for all the wrong reasons. :D

Take the kayak. :)

Jessolo and a 24hr or 48hr pass is a great way to visit, as it gives you access not only to the main island, but also the outlying islands of Murano, Burano & others - much quieter, prettier & less touristy. The passes aren't cheap, but are well worth it IMHO for the flexibility and convenience.

Regular busses run up and down the Lido, which'll give you options on where to stay.

Years ago when we were planning to go there I Was going to do that. I found a site that I reckoned I could have paddled into Venice from and along the grand canal. :D The general advice was you would have to be mad to do it which of course I am so whats the problem? :D

We never got there in the end. About 40 miles short and Michelle took ill. Another long story.

We planned to stay at Lido de Jesolo, but when we got there we didn't fancy it. We ended up at Camping Miramar, near Punta Sabbioni, much quieter, but more our style.
We've also stayed at Pianiga, again a short train ride into Venice, or Padua.

All I remember about it was it being one long strip of hotels and a beach. Not exactly pretty I don't think. If we go I'll probably stay down the Venice end and just take a ride down on the bike. I would imagine it would just be a few days. See Venice, Dip in the sea if its warm enough, bugger off back into the Alps.

We stopped on Camping Fusina and it worked out quite cheap with the card and it is only a very short walk to the water bus (Vaporetto] . Get the water bus pass for however many days you want, It's well worth it and you will use it to visit all Venice and the islands as well without to much walking.
To beat the massive queues for the major attractions by get your tickets on the day by phone as you can book time slots.
Fusina is well placed to visit such as Chioggia etc on the scoot.
I think it is the only major tourist city that I have ever said I want to go back to.

Yes those boat passes make a lot of sense. So thats an ACSI site then? Did you book it or just turn up? I never generally book anything and assumed in May / June I wouldn't have to although I noticed earlier some weeks in May on the three ACSI sites I looked at are not ACSI rate on some so I wonder if there is a half term holiday there.

We just turned up. I think it was about a week before the holiday season starts in Italy as they were just starting to set the beaches up with loungers. This was about six years ago.

We also stopped at this site...(fusina)
We don't normally stop at sites but this was ok and would stop at more if they were like this.
The water taxi was cheap ( i think) and a short trip into the city. Just turned up.
Might call back there on the way back from Croatia/ Greece in June.
