From The Queen's Royal Lancers Website:

Goodbye to my England, So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English ever again.

At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected, staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils don't learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings , Arnhem or Mons ?
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.

We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away over the sea.
We're the English from England, let's all be proud
Stand up and be counted - Shout it out loud !

Let's tell our Government and Brussels too

We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue

Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack
Let the world know - WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!

I worked overseas for many years and never referred to myself as English. I used to say I was British instead.

Up here in the North East (of England) we only ever got a few scraps off the table in the good times and bu$$er all in the lean times. The Durham Light Infantry raised more battalions than any other Infantry Regiment in the First World War so patriotism was there then. The soldiers came back to more of the same and the rot set in. My 2 Grandfathers survived the war and were very bitter about the state of things. A `Land Fit for Heroes` it certainly was not.

Half of my village joined Scottish Regiments during the next war. If there had been a vote on it, I believe we would have opted to become part of Scotland once the Scots got a devolved Parliament.

I am however, willing to do as much for Britain as my politicians are willing to do for me.

it seems to me it is our own fault that we dont seem to be proud of being english .we have been in soth wales now for almost a year :D and one thing i have found is the welsh a proud of there heritage they fly the welsh flag they also keep there welsh language alive ;) even though they cannot spell ambulance :D in other words they are proud to be welsh and wobetide anyone that tried to take it away from them. we being english have rolled over and given in to all the politicaly correct troupe its our own fault .ps i cannot comment on our freinds up top of the border as i have never been there

The English flag is St George's and not the Union Jack which is British, please if you want to support our 'English' heritage please don't use the Union Jack!

Mandrake, if you haven't been North of the border then I'm afraid you are losing out.
Come North my man, even if it is only to the Central belt and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
(Just consult the Midge forecast first though).

I always understood that the Union Jack refered to the "Jack" staff on which the actual flag was flown. The flag of Great Britain is the Union Flag.

When I first got a passport I put my nationality as British/English, now I am not allowed to.
Is our government paid in Dollars, Deutsche Marks, Francs or Euros? I don't think they should be paid in Pounds Sterling cos they seem to be working against the national interest.
I am not anti anyone, but I am pro British.

... further correction... the British flag is the Union Flag. The Jack is the pole it flies from.

While we are on the subject of corrections, I think you'll find that Shaw was Irish. Personally, I'm happy to be a member of the human race. I think it was Shaw who talked about patriotism being the last refuge of the scoundrel - if I'm right it lends an interesting irony to this thread!

I always proudly wear a rose and an english pin badge on the 23 April....it still amazes me when I have to explain to english folk why I am wearing it.

Which Rose

Which rose but might allow certain tribal factions in the north an identity!

I shall be celebrating St.George's day in London as I did last year.

I'm English through and through, not european, not Scottish, not Welsh nor Irish. Just English and proud of it....
