Going up to John O'Groats tomorrow and wondered if overnight parking is tolerated in the main car park and if not how much is the camp site? I have emailed the site but no reply.
Thanks
Dave

Don't know about overnighting at John o Groats but it's a bit run down. Dunnet Head not to far and much nicer.

Camped on Thurso Quay two years ago.

It had those yellow and black "advisory" no overnight parking signs. Just ignore them. Police came round a few times on their rounds, they are not interested.

I went there in November. One camper there so I suppose it would be ok. I stopped at Dunnet right on the front, was great. Tiny spot but very remote. As others have said John'O'Groats is overrated, very touristy. Won't be going back again.

There used to be a couple of flat spots on the climb up to Dunnet Head. You can check them out on your way up. You might as well go right up to the Car Park for the view (no overnighting allowed), then pull in on the way down.

I've spent many a night next to the outdoor swimming pool in Hayle just over the bridge with no problems!

Q when was no onighting at Dunnet head brought in?
Is it official ?
I know the lighthouse and houses are private but the carparks huge if on a slight angle. We were there last August and locals came and went with a wave, no probs ?

The sign was there 4 years ago (the last time we wasted diesel going to J O'G).

It would depend on who owns the car park. It could be Trinity House or the local Council.

The car park was quite busy and we decided to move on a bit. I had a much nicer spot in mind which is now one of the POI's.

Dunnet Head is an RSPB Reserve, did not see any no over night signs when we was there last year.

tolerated??

North

Just in case you are interested Dunnet Head is further North than John O' Groats and free. Last time I went, three years ago there were a LOT of Orchids growing beside the foot path to the light house.

better off by the river in thurso, more to do , or even up on the carpark at sea front, the views are excellent but can be a bit windy !!

Good memories of the most northerly point in the mainland UK...

& if you go to Johnnies Groats don't pay the official man for the sign post, either wait until he nips away for a tea break or stand by the free signpost...

And they say that the Scottish are tight fisted! :lol-049:

Sorry it wasn't Dunnet, my stopping place was CR Dwarwick Head (Highland) it's in the POI's near Dunnit. Fantastic little place and has a great view. Not a soul in site, mind you it was November.
