Is gas still an option?

Our fridge, (when working) is on LPG 24/7, but they use very little.

Sounds about right.

how much gas does a full size dometic motorhome fridge use over 24 hours?

A full-size Dometic motorhome absorption (3-way) fridge typically uses between 1.0 to 1.5 pounds of propane (approximately 350 to 470 grams) over a 24-hour period. [1, 2]

Gas Bottle Lifespan Estimations
To make this data more practical, a standard full-size fridge running continuously on gas will drain your tanks at the following estimated rates (assuming no other gas appliances are in use):
  • 6 kg Cylinder: Lasts about 13 to 17 days.
  • 9 kg Cylinder: Lasts about 19 to 25 days.
  • 20 lb Tank (4.7 gallons): Lasts about 13 to 20 days.

As we also heat up water for showers, cooking etc I would say two weeks or just over if we are lucky is pretty good for a 6kg bottle. Its fortunate that we tend to go on hookup when heating is required otherwise I would empty it in about four days tops I reckon.

A 6kg bottle will last
5 days in winter when using heating

14 to 17 days when mainly parked up.

18 to 22 days when travelling in the day, only stopping one night before moving on.

Individual owner's consumption figures are only really useful if they include the size of the M/Home, the thermostat setting for heating and hot water, and the periods of usage. We used roughly twice as much lpg in Spain from Dec 25 to late Feb 26 as we did in the previous Winter; but it was one storm after another, so external temperature was much lower, the weather kept us indoors for much longer, feeling much cooler/colder, and the lack of meaningful solar contribution meant we couldn't use the inverter+ induction hob for cooking

Pointless arguing about how much ga someone should use cos it completely depends on what they have and how they use it. That big Hymer Charlie has would go through a 13Kg bottle of gas in a Weeknd in Winter, Karen just had heating set constant at 26 degrees lol

Should have said
6 metre coach built
Heating on from 4 o clock in evening to 9 following morning. Hot water only on for showers, use kettle for washing up.All meals cooked in van,no eating out.

Absolutely positive I don't have a leak. A 6kg Gaslow bottle holds 11.5 litres I believe. Summer usage is generally about 0.75 litres a day roughly as long as no heating is used.
My (pretty big) fridge freezer claims to use 310 grammes of LPG per 24 hours, and my experience suggests that's about right for hot weather.

LPG is almost* exactly 500 grammes per litre, so that's 0.62 litres per day.

Why is yours using so much more if there is no leak?

Do you not have vent fans? They make better use of the power your fridge uses.

*LPG increases in volume quite a bit with temperature. The vapour pressure increases a lot with temperature. Obviously, the mass does not increase with temperature.

So you can adjust the weight/volume figure by choosing the temperature.

Pity AI uses American measures. The rest of the world moved on half a century ago.

A simple T to connect to the regulator, just a matter of closing off manual valves, I'd presume to switch from the tank to the cylinder
Mine had a simple T connecting the low pressure sides, with a stop valve on the feed from the tank's regulator and one on the feed from the on-bottke regulator.

This meant that you couldn't run the LPG generator off a bottle - the generator feed is at tank pressure.

Mine isn't using so much more. There are 11.5 litres of Gas in a 6kg bottle and ours will last a couple of weeks, maybe a bit more so that ties in with your figures. We also heat up water for showers and cook food so its actually pretty good.

I have heard Eberspacher type diesel heaters that sound like a jet engine winding up
I have a cheap chinese diesel heater in the shed. It isn't all that noisy when starting up.

The fan modulates with the heat output setting, so it's a bit noisy at full tilt, but that's rarely for long.

The exhaust used to roar a bit until I swapped it with a different, quieter, one off ebay.

The pump made an annoying ticking noise, but I swapped that for a 'silent' one that is much quieter.

Works very well heating the shed.

However, in the motorhome, I have a gas tank.

LPG is cheaper than diesel, burns quieter and cleaner and needs no glowplug or fuel pump consuming 12v power.

If you have refillable gas, best use it for heating. If not, diesel is the way to go.
