iPad deal?? Is it any good?

Please be careful with the terminology used:

Unlimited Wifi on your phone contract is NOT unlimited 3G data. It is unlimited access to wifi access points (if available).
Unlimited 3G (cellular data) is very different, it uses the local cell sites not wifi.

Other than three (3 mobile) all mobile providers have fair use policies on their unlimited data (so its not unlimited)

Correct. And out of the way places are more likely to have 3G than BT Openzone etc. I also find Openzone access very slow at times - next to useless if it is a popular time of day.

well guys, today I have phoned o2 and changed my tariff to support tethering,(for the same price) I get unlimited wifi so I can now tether to my laptop.
The lady said that o2 business which I am on, does not support tethering with an ipad at the moment. Is there a way around this? Or do I have to forget the ipad until my tariff catches up with the market demand?

thanks
lotty

good news on the deal you have got

i think they have it worng about the ipad tho when you turn on hotspot on the other devices see your phone as a wifi spot so would be no differnt to laptop/ipad

or o2 are saying if you have an ipad3g you cant turn the hotspot on the ipad on

A really useful thread, thanks to all for the advice. I'm just about to get an IPAD for my forthcoming continental trip. Would an aerial be useful, and if so can anyone recommend one?

My Ipad deal

I am thinking of getting an iPad and have today been offered this deal..

iPad 3 16GB. 2GB 3G Data, 2GB of BT open zone wifi,
24.99+ VAT (on a business contract) 2 year contract, iPad free.

Does this sound a good deal or not???:confused:

Anyone seen any good deals on them, Im not sure whether to buy one outright and just get a sim card or have one on contract so I don't have to pay for one up front?

Any ideas/help much appreciated
Lotty

My IPad is great and I am on it now in the new forest, I have it tethered to my mobile phone so I don't need a separate contract and it is at not extra data cost on my contract. Very worth a thought. I have not found any disadvantages. I bought it outright 32gig I wish I had got a bigger one

Er... yes, I think so, but I'm confused after the advice above that you can't connect one to an IPAD?

got one!

Well I did it, I've bought an ipad!:scared:
After some great advise I have weighed up the options and got one on contract.
The New iPad, 16gb 4G, £159 up front then £25 per month on 3. Worked out better for me this way than buying it outright and PAYG.
Just setting it all up.:pc:
Will see how it goes.

Thanks everyone for your advise

AFAIK the ipad still doesn't come with a USB port. So the normal kind of USB wifi aerial won't work. You have to make do with what the ipad has onboard.

Thanks to all for the advice! Have just bought one and saved myself £100 by not going for 4G, I was tempted until I read this thread.

Well, I don't know why the advisor at O2 told me I can't tether my iPad to my iPhone cus I've just done it. She told me my tarrif doesn't support tethering to an iPad as its a business one but it's just worked?
And I thought I was the one who doesn't understand technology!

have you tethered your ipad to your iphone, or your iphone to your ipad?
The diference is which internet source you use (ipad or iphone)
Your ipad has got personal hotspot enabled (cause its on 3) but your iphone most likely wont have it.

I had to pay extra with orange to permit tethering (on my iphone) on my non business contract BUT I'm not convinced they can tell if you do without paying.
They looked at business deals for me but couldn't improve on the ordinary offers.
I claim the full £36 per month anyway under instruction of accountant

I think ive done it via my phone? I went on my personal hotspots on my phone and then had to put in a pass code on the iPad to connect to it? But this is me and technology :scared: :lol-053:
