Sorry if it’s been asked but I need something to keep in the camper for when we are away to help boost my phone signal. I need access to internet and get calls and make calls for emergencies

Do I need to contact my EE ?

Online ebay etc have 12v wifi units with antenna, you will require a data sime for this.

Devices that actually boost the phone signal are a bit of a tricky one. 12v routers with an external antenna are more widely used in the motorhome community. This involves having a dedicated SIM though.

If your phone takes two Sims that might help. I often carry an EE SIM and my main Vodafone one installed in slot one and two. Usually one, the other or both work. I also use the various online coverage checkers to see what the signals like where I am heading. If there isn't one. I'll go somewhere else. 😁

Slightly off topic but after advise from a fellow member I changed from using my phone to a dedicated router, Netgear Nighthawke and an EE sim.
Have to say it’s been brilliant. Had reception on Skye and more or less everywhere else I’ve been in England and Scotland.
Presently watching the sky cricket with my dodgy fire stick, excellent down and upload speeds. I now rarely use my roof mounted Aerial.
The Netgear router isn’t cheap but like most things you get what you pay for.

Hims right, I’d only add a prepaid 3 sim via Scancom would be better than an EE contract card. But again that’s an upfront loaded cost.

We have now installed a Poynting omni aerial and coupled with the Nighthawk router it's pretty good. Not done much with it yet as have not been in the van now ffor two months (surgery) but we did try the set up in a spot that we knew had no signal at all, as in no tv and no mobile. It rained of course so we sat and watched the live coverage of the TDF. Never missed a beat so so far rather impressed.

Then £69.99 until 8th January 2027 should be ok with you then Trev.

Am I missing something here?
No matter what equipment you use if a (mobile) signal is not available from whatever provider in a particular location, yer fooked( Thats a Trevism)
Yes, some provide better coverage in particular areas, and some, none at all.
If a connection is essential, then is Starlink an option?

Basically yes your right, but often you’ll find

A) You get little or no signal inside the Motorhome but a reasonably signal outside, in which case an external antenna connected to a 4/5g router inside will make a difference.
B) Different mobile routers produce massively different results.
C) Different providers will be better in different areas, therefore having a number of sims cards can really help, I use 3 and EE

I spend a lot of time at race circuits and also in the Highlands and with the 2 SIM cards, an Poynting Omni antenna and a NightHawk M6 router it’s very rare I don’t get fast internet.

I normally have other vans around me at race circuits and many use Starlink, Starlink users pretty much always get a signal but although I sometimes don’t when I do mines always faster. And it’s cheaper.

In addition when I’m not using the Motorhome I take the mobile router with me in the car, on the train etc can’t do that with Starlink

When we moved to this house there was no phone signal whatsoever, and no broadband but with a council grant we installed a 4G internet antenna on the wall for broadband and enjoyed around 10 thingys reception so although sceptical to begin with I can state that even without a phone signal to your phone you will get a phone signal to a decent antenna/modem for broadband, your phone will still be useless though 😀

But would wifi calling work? If so the mobile will work.

Was at Frampton Country Fair last weekend, as often happens at these shows the mobile networks where overwelmed and traders struggled to get payment machines working, I noticed two icecream vans with Starlink who where having no problems.

Not at the time with EE sim in the modem and the phone, now we have super fast fibre yes it does, remember this was 7 years ago which in internet terms is the Stone Age, btw we still have no phone signal :ROFLMAO:

Not necessarily Tim.
Recently we were in Lauder near the borders in the CCC site. No phone signal with EE but our 5G router with a EE data sim with roof top aerial managed 8 mbs just enough to watch tv. Obviously there will be places were nothing will work, but a router connected to a roof top aerial may well get you enough signal strength, when your phone won’t.

Simple question.
Do you have to use a data only sim in the WIFI router?
Can you not just use your normal phone SIM and the data on that ?
