Hi all, new to the forum here, hoping to get some advice from people with some hands-on experience with small self-builds.

I'm currently looking to get a small van (Partner/Berlingo/Kangoo size) with the hopes of turning it into a small basic camper. Been hoping to do this for years but now in a position to do it financially. Looking to keep it super simple, just a bed down one side and a small kitchen/storage unit along the other (no plumbing, just a power station and a basic camping stove). Maybe one day I'll embark on a bigger project but for now this small camper is all I'm looking for and will allow me to do some extended fishing/camping trips.

Thought this would be pretty simple but of course this is the UK and there seems to be several bureaucratic hoops for me to jump through that I naively didn't consider.

I recently spoke to a rep from Just Kampers about getting a quote on a Partner and was looking to check some of the information he gave me and ask a few other questions. I was told that I would need to reclassify the van as a camper conversion through the DVLA but that looks to be impossible with the height of the van being what it is anyway. I've seen elsewhere though that I can put some windows in and some decals on the side and instead get it reclassified as a 'van with windows' instead, is that correct?

Do some people not bother reclassifying it at all, and would I still be able to get camper insurance if I didn't? Do some people even get by with just standard van insurance and hope they don't get caught?

On top of which the campervan insurance quotes I've been getting seem incredibly high for what I'm trying to insure, with most being between £600 and £800 a year. Still waiting to hear back from Howdens who I've heard good things about but can't see them being able to go too much lower. Trying not to get too disheartened about all this as I've wanted to do this for years, I was about to go and view a van today or tomorrow that looked perfect for what I wanted too.

Unfortunately there are several requirements for a campervan to be reclassified for instance the cooker must be fixed and not a camping stove set up at mealtimes, a bed of a minimum size, a sink etc. etc. (all requirements can be found on the DVLA website)

It can be difficult though and many are taking the van with windows route - even professional converters.

6ft bed fixed cooker, wardrobe, 25 ltrs water,2 windows on one side, as above all on dvla site, unsurance will drop and a standard mot and not hgv mot.

This is also doable.

You could always throw a mattress into the back of a small van along with a camping stove, portaloo etc and carry a small tent with you. If ever stopped or involved in an accident you could simply say that you were going tent camping, it's perfectly legal to carry camping gear in your vehicle.

I used to do this in a Citroen Dispatch although I did have a roof tent on top which was brilliant.

Don't forget either, it doesn't have to be a van, there are many cars (such as the Berlingo) which make great mini campers and if you have a look around you can find some great conversions on Youtube. Here's a video of a simple version;

I went through all of this with my Boxer conversion. The DVLA went through a period where even if you met their criteria they were issuing “van with windows”. I believe the situation may have improved and with some more stand out decals might try again for the correct classification. Insurance hasn’t been a problem as the companies that insure self builds were aware of what the DVLA were doing. I would get the correct insurance for your conversion. It’s difficult to compare insurance costs as it will very much depends on the individual, location, vehicle etc. I’m insured with Adrian Flux. You might want to see what they can provide, if you’ve not tried them already.

Where do you

Read the post Trev - the bit that said 'Portaloo'.

For washing I carried a bucket which I filled with water from the kettle mixed with some cold and one of those 12v shower pumps along with a toilet/shower tent when I needed a shower;

and the tent;

Ok Rob but dont see that much use in a rainey stormy day, or may best use swimming centre for a shower.
