Import Duties for a bonnet catch.

Marie the two parts had never been welded together. The U shaped locking part was simply hammered through the two holes on the plate. If they had even hammered the ends it would have held. But now they are welded together thanks to the garage. Bye the way the guy in the garage was really helpful. He stopped what he was doing took the two parts away and came back 5 minutes later with them welded together. Then he would not take any money. I had to leave him £10 on a table and make my exit. He saved me £109 and weeks of waiting for the parts. All I had to do was bolt the parts back on to the bonnet when I got back. I have a bottle of whisky in the cupboard, I intend to take it to him soon.
He may be good living or a tea man, best to drop in a box of t bags and a couple jars of coffee.

I have worked in the metal bashing business (overhauling and repairing Power Presses). In the Nineties and Noughties a great many companies went out of business. The equipment was snapped up at scrap prices and exported to Third World countries like India and the Far East. The few who have survived should be having a resurgence in business and hopefully the sector will grow.
There are a number of companies near me who geared up for high quality, top end work and have prospered. Their customers are worldwide. So don't knock the UK skill base. :)

Nobody's knocking the UK skill base, Jim.
Just lamenting how it has shrunk since cheaply engineered metal goods from the Far East have flooded the Western market the last few decades.

Brother of a good friend of mine runs a high-end engineering firm (metals) here in the NE (north of the Tyne).
Some of the parts they've manufactured have gone as far as Mars (sic). ;)(y)

But that's in a completely different league to manufacturing everyday cutlery or engine bonnet locks.

Buy British, what they dont make anything any more LOL.
They make plenty of cars where I spend most of my days....

AND plenty have overseas market as there final destination.

We also make a heap of specialised equipment...

MOST F1 car chassis are built in the UK

As well as medical equipment
AND some pretty specialised aircraft and weapons systems.

They are just lazy. It's no more hassle than it's always been shipping outside Europe.
Before ****** though they were not shipping outside Europe just dealing within Europe. The OP is about Europe not the rest of the world.
I send stuff all over the world and like you said I've found it no different or harder to send to Europe than the USA or Japan, just using ****** as an excuse 👍

Regards,
Del
If you trade all over the world then it is no different. The OP was about trade within Europe and that certainly is different post ******.
This is a concern for many who export to the EU. Why would a company within the EU who have seamless trading within the EU deal with a supplier in the uk with all of these issues, if they can get their supplies for the same price or slightly more within the EU. Hence why our trading has dropped of since January 1 2021.
That is exactly what happens. What was pre ****** slightly cheaper in the UK for the rest of Europe no longer is due to duties, so they source elsewhere within Europe now.

Those in the EU have been buying from non EU companies for a long time. They bought from us because no-one on their doorstep makes it. They certainly weren't buying from us because it was cheap 🤣

Drop in trading might have a -little- bit to do with CV 🙄

I never stated we were cheap, and the reason for the drop in trade is currently uncertain. But it seems obvious that as trading with the U.K. is now more difficult, time consuming, and possibly expensive, these may well have much to do with the current situation. My original point was meant to highlight the additional charge that was being applied, and the delay in receiving the part, and as far as I am aware, these charges work both ways.

Yea, the 1970's UK produced cars were awesome. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What car manufacturers did with the quality steel provided by our steelworks is another issue. But I had two pre 2003 Mercedes’ that were rust buckets. After this they started to galvanise their cars. Mechanically they were excellent cars though.

Absolutely! - not :ROFLMAO:

Aside from cars though, Sheffield was world renowned for the quality of everyday steel tools and cutlery and the mass production of cheap refined steel for railway parts, armour plating and construction. At one time Sheffield supplied 50% of Europe's total production.

It was also central to arming the military during both world wars.

UK steel industry is now tiny in comparison to what it once was.
(The 2008 crash, lower demand, rising energy prices, a strong pound and China’s alleged “steel dumping”).

I bought a Morris Marina 1.8TC that was very cheap and i thought was a bargin  :)

Got that one slightly wrong and i sold it on the same day with a £25 profit to a mate who became an ex-mate once he realised what i`d done o_O 🤬 :ROFLMAO:

Who needs enemies with friends like you Woo!:ROFLMAO:

When I worked in Belfast beside a layland garage, a 1100 came of the loader with 2 doors on one side and one door on the other, how they managed that or how it got past inspection, it was the talk of the street for weeks.
Then shortly after that cars from bl came in with paint coming of, later found out workers were pi--ing in the paint tanks.

Aye Trev, we sent all the rubbish over to you, and kept the garbage over here ;)

I apologise for mentioning ******, but I do so for a good reason, and as a warning to you all.

I required a new bonnet catch for my Roller Team Pegaso.
They stated that as it was out of warranty they would supply it for £27, plus £55 import duties.
I enquired about the import duties, and was informed that this was because of ******.
So the Toal would have been £82.
So I went to a local garage and they informed me that the locking hook had never been welded to the plate, simply forced together.
As I am rarely inside the engine it took over two years for them to come apart.
Anyway the garage welded them together in five minutes for free.
But I insisted on giving them £10.
I bolted it all back together, and it's working fine now.
So beware of import charges.
Heres photos of the parts involved.
Forgot to mention, it would have taken 8 to10 weeks for them to supply a simple catch.

I've checked on a duty calculator site and according to them there is no import duty chargeable just the VAT @ 20% if there is shipping costs involved then that may change the amount of VAT.
