i want to boost my mobile phone signal while away

EE seems the best to me for rural which is where we find ourselves most of the time but having said that, Vodafone throughout Wales and Devon has been spot on but then again as said, I use the coverage checkers first. EE I found is vital for the Isle of Arran and the Lake District which are two others of our regular haunts. Both are the two main hitters so your not going to go far wrong with having both in your phone unless your way off grid down a deep valley and even down there you might struggle with a booster and a booster can only amplify what's there in the first place.

Vodafone I always found was superb in Europe as it partnered with all the main providers.
At the workshop I used to rent, I think it was similar to your situation at home... only provider in the area was Vodaphone and even they were very poor - I used to have some kind of Booster (provided by Vodafone) so I could use the phone inside the workshop. (I guess some kind of signal repeater more than a booster?

Any views on best providers for the Hebrides and the Orkneys? Good to be prepared with a PAYG SIM for a month :)
I think in Europe the best option seems to be a local country SIM for data use from what I generally read?

On the phone I have a SKY Mobile (O2) SIM as my main SIM for Data and personal calls, and an RWG Mobile (Now = EE?) SIM as a emergency Data backup if no O2 service and for business calls.

PS. I think we agree on the boosters... I said "I don't they are legal" rather than "I do think they are illegal " :)

Vodafone used to do the Sure Signal which basically was WiFi calling via your router so you had to have land based broadband for it to work.

Not sure about outer hebrides but the best thing to do is find the providers signal checker and give it a postcode for where your going. It will give you a good idea which is best

Mobile signal repeaters are no longer automatically illegal but they are strictly controlled by Ofcom. They are capable of causing feedback between boosted output and the receiving aerial which can block other users so the gain has to be limited. The use in vehicles is even more limited and only a very small gain is permitted.
I bought a car compliant one and frankly it is not much use. I eventually got it working with a Yagi aerial but with so little gain allowed it really is very limited. Also if there is no signal present outside then no amount of boosting and gain will help. 0 x anything still = 0.

I think the EU roaming depends on when you joined EE, my brother has been with them for a few years contacted them after ****** and they said he still gets the full data allowance in the EU because is contract was signed before a certain date (can't remember the date sorry).

Del

I can't remember. I know what you mean but I never had a landland there. It was some kind of white box IIRC (it was over 10 years ago!).

Just to repeat. I have a system I put in 6-7 yrs ago that DID amplify a mobile signal from a dodgy one that could barely sustain a call without breaking up to one that could download video and stream music/radio. And I believe to be perfectly legal.

Inspired by the couple who ran/run Motorhomewifi who sold such a setup for something like 200 quid i spent a long time researching and found the individual components at a price i could afford.

I had an external 4g antenna fixed to the roof and hard wired it to a Huawei router that had terminals to take the wires.

I used these. Now the equvilant 5g antenna is £160plus a netgear router at 7-800. I think I'll stay at 4g for now.

As too a device that will amplify a signal straight to a mobile? I would be very careful before I parted with ANY money.

I had the huawei in my last van and it worked fine, I’ve put a TELTONIKA RUT850 in this van with s simple puck antenna on the roof and tbh it’s not as good, but, it required and extra connection to fakra connection which probably didn’t help, whatever you choose it has to be an external antenna (faraday cage and all that) just remember 3G is pretty much phased out in Europe and a lot of UK too.

Now I've retired I don't need to be connected constantly so not worried if I loose signal for days

I notice Tim's not been back. I bet he's read this thread and just thought "Fcuk this for a game of soldiers" which I think was my conclusion last year. 🤣
I think he went for a ride on his little Yamaha Fizzie ;)

in the words of Arnie.. I am back!
more confused than ever now
so eff this for a game of soldiers
the one unit I considered doesn't support EE
so will just take my chances while away .. if no phone signal to watch the telly etc.. I will just have to crack a bottle open and talk to the missus
