I suspect that this will end in tears.

3/4 of the population of Englandshire are too lazy to go walking wiljdcamping, Covid staycations were exceptional times. There might be a flurry to start with and then it will settle down.

Agree.

I think there may be signs it already has?

For a whole variety of reasons; the main one (besides laziness) being fiscal limitations, the second being "weather" 🌧️;)

I suspect staycations are on the decline also. Currently in Devon. Spent three weeks between Woolacombe ans Ilfracombe in north Devon and have been down at Salcombe for a couple of weeks. I vowed never to come here in the school holidays but it's been alright. I think it was busier last summer when we were here just before the school holidays.

Speaking to the locals rentals are down. Farmer here reckons a lot of them around here are £350 a night. Maybe a lot of people have naffed off back abroad.

I'm glad to hear that Devon is quieter than usual Barry as I'm off to Slapton Sands on Saturday and then Cornwall on Monday.

I expect you've left a drink in for me in a few of the Devonshire pubs? :)

Going by my experiences of before/During and after Covid ...

A large proportion of that 3/4 of the population WILL and DO go to great lengths to carry large quantities of alcohol/disposable BBQs/cheap tents and general camping shite into some of the furthest flung places from local conurbations and then leave it there AFTER they depart ...

Seriously the amount of other people's crap ive trekked out and disposed of responsibly would have you questioning your statement ....

A large section of Humanity constantly strives to resort to the lowest common denominator ...

Frankly IF the Peak District is opened up to wild camping ...
It will quickly resemble something akin to a post apocalyptic wasteland with shite spread far and wide .

Got to agree with you 100% on that one 😟

Although, having said that, I watched a very recent video from someone who was trialling a backpacking tent up on Kinder Scout. There were 3 other campers (not connected) camping within the same vicinity as the YouTuber, but they all seemed to be very responsible wildcampers, all following the country code and "leaving nothing but footprints"?

Marie if that is the case then why is Dartmoor not in utter turmoil.

Right now its the only part of England were you can freely wild camp.
Why are all of those people you reckon will create havoc not heading down there now.

Possibly there will be problems at the start, but if this happens it will eventually become the norm and things will quieten down.
Lets not assume that all who use tents are morons, they're not.

Sadly there's a,big difference between the small amount of responsible 'wild campers'

And the bulk of NEDS that will take the permission as a green light to head off with a heap of alcohol cheap tent and disposable BBQ all of which will be left behind in one way or another ....

Possibly SOME areas will be OK being far enough out of the way of cities/town's and conurbations ....
Unfortunately most areas of places like the peak district are within easy reach of Manchester/Derby/Stoke/Sheffield etc etc ...

Having been up to Loch Doon a few years back ...
The same applied ...

We were advised by the local rangers to leave before the influx on Friday night ...

Beer cans/abandoned camping crap and camping chairs with holes cut in the base for a impromptu toilet abounded .

Sadly to a large proportion of folks in town's/cities ...
Acting like animals would frankly be an upgrade .

Quick look on a map will show one obvious reason as to why the Peak District may suffer where as Dartmoor doesn't.

The Peak District is a very short drive from many of the UK's biggest cities. The amount of people it will possibly have to deal with is potentially massive compared to Dartmoor.

I don't blame anyone for being concerned.

I'm thankful that someone understands my concerns ...

As someone Living on ONE of the doorsteps to the peak district ..

I can frankly see little but pain ....
whilst still wanting to defend everyone's right to enjoy wild spaces .

Try wild camping in the Highlands on any of Anders Povlsen’s (the biggest private land owner in Scotland) land in the Highlands!

Jaysus H Christ!

I'd better up me budget.

Michelle was just reading the bar menu for the cafe shack on Salcombe north beach. £12.50 for a large glass of wine. Food is really expensive. I suppose it is a bit like the St Tropez of the south west. Actually I think it's probably more expensive. You can get a top kebab in St Tropez for less than a tenner. Burger and chips is twenty quid here.

Mark you are living in what is Europes second most densely populated country, only Holland is more densely populated. If I look at a map of England every national park is within easy reach of millions of people. Yes the Peak District would be nearer large cities being between Manchester and Sheffield, with other cities near by. But the same to a lesser extent could be said for the dales, and the other 8 national parks in England. The national parks to the south would also be near to large cities. But bottom line is I find no matter where I go in England you are never far from large cities and towns, and lots of people. To some extent this requires a leap of faith, or are you English content to have limited access to what is your country, content with landowners deciding were and when you can have access to what should be your birthright.

Maybe everyone will start wild camping in Devon. Michelle just found this up the road from where we are. Basically a beach hut. Your have to hike to it, can only stay two nights and the price in September? £1250. 🤣 There isn't even any WiFi or 4g! 🫣

I darent say how much we are paying for our cl or where it is. 😎
