I bet the repair cost was for new parts and labour etc, i bet there not allowed to just fill in and repair dents.
Here are some pics of the damage.
Fair enough . but quality is remembered long after the price .
Good luck

? ..I am slightly baffled how people outside the industry seem to assume they know more than the people who do it day in day out.

Modern garages don't have mechanics any more they have fitters and a lot of body work repairs are outsourced to specialist firms. The Ed Chinas of this world are a rare breed!Quite easy to 'diss' the professionals, as some say, there are a lot who only repair with authentic parts, for the mere smallest of scratch, and so add much more to the cost of the job, and there are those who do a repair using existing bodywork with skills not used by some to have the repair functional.
You get what you want and insurance companies don't want the latter.

Looking at that damage, doing a proper repair will involve new door frame mouldings, new panels and a lot of expense. Probably about £6000 to £8000 is my guess. However, that looks to me as if it is a 1998 Hymer 534 worth about £17000 or more. So even an £8000 repair bill shouldn't write it off.
However, if you really like the van, get the insurance company to write it off and pay you what it is worth, then buy it back off them then get it fixed, with filler in the panels, bashing the mouldings back to more or less how they should be and you'll get it looking 95% perfect for no more than £1500.
