Hello,
Can anyone out there with the more classic hymer help? Where do you source parts? We need the silver skirt? Hamilton cannot help and brownhills really are not good to deal with any help most appreciated. Has anyone else in the community got a s700?

Join the classic Hymer free group on Facebook, ask them the same question. You don't even have to have a classic to join.

We also have a 1992 S700 Bar version. 419D Transporter. Owned it since November 2006. We have been using it for 6 years full timing. We have found parts at various online outlets such as O'Leary's O'Leary Motorhomes - the UK's No1 source for Motorhome self build, parts and accessories and Leisure Shop Direct Caravan spares | Leisureshopdirect | UK

We have had habitation work done a Peter Hambilton and he has been able to supply parts we needed.

Our passenger seatbelt stork has failed for the second time (Fatigue due to getting caught up when the seat is swivelled). Last time we obtained one from Kimberly Caravans.

Full timing punishes a van and we have had to replace numerous taps and water pumps, Fridge burner jet and heating elements, Front heater and burner for the rear heater. heated and skewing mirror (£350) and spare mirror glass.

Mercedes parts we have been able to get from the Mercedes Truck Dealers. Lack of power can be down to perished vacuum pipes as these control the advance and retard. We have found that genuine Mercedes exhaust parts outlast the after market ones by 3 times.

We needed new wing mirror arms and had to get then custom made at a local metalwork shop, as Hymer could no longer supply.

If you have problems with the !2v voltage drop check and clean the contacts of the shunt behind the fuse box on the drivers side. Small horseshoe this also is no longer obtainable from Hymer. The replacement has the same part number but is massive and won't fit into the space behind the fuse box.

Which is why a self build or custom build can be a better option, if fitted out with domestic quality plumbing and electrcal fittings. Stainless steel shower tray and whb, rather than glass fibre or acrylic. Plastic laminate wall boarding and furniture or real veneer, not photo finish vinyl.

I have looked inside many makes of motorcaravans including Hymers. I'm sure Hymer was and is in the higher quality segment of the motorcaravan market.
But the fact remains that nearly all motor caravans are made with materials and fittings generally less substantial than can be found in the domestic or even marine environment, just for reasons of weight saving, sometimes cost and the fact that the vehicle is rarely intended for constant useage long term living, the manufacturers would be stupid to do otherwise. A ten year lifespan is possibly all they contemplate, I suspect some budget marques plan on five years which probably based on the average ownership period of the first owner. Sod subsequent owners.

We had Full Timing insurance with AVIVA through Comfort. They are the only people who will do cover without a UK residence and being on the Electoral Roll at that address. Not cheap! We have just gone back into bricks and mortar and our insurance has gone down by £1,000 from £1,400 to £373.
Comfort use their post code in Dagenham as the basis for any FT quote. We are in County Durham.

I had heard of problems with new people trying to get cover and was assured by Comfort that we would be covered for as long as we needed it. There were some problems about 6 or 7 years ago with people getting FT cover with some other companies and then making high value claims in the first year. NFU was one company that withdrew from the market because of this scam.

As for Parts. I went into Kimberley Caravans yesterday and was told that they couldn't get parts for vans over 7 years old. I contacted Brownhills ay Newark and got first class service from Daren who was very knowledgeable on old Hymer parts and their availability.

The fabric of the pre 1994 Hymers are fine for full timing. It is the caravan parts such as taps and water pumps that give out. We found we had to replace a water pump 3 times in 6 years and the taps lasted about 18 months due to the micro switch wiring not being up to the job. The taps were otherwise fine. I now see that someone is selling micro switches but most dealers only sell complete taps. Fitters say it is cheaper for them to fit a new tap than charge for the labour of replacing a micro switch wiring. Fires are used more so need more attention.

I reckon that fulltiming equates to three times the wear of normal use. ( ie 6 years = 18 years normal use.)

The thing is you're more or less stuck with and have to live with what someone else decides regarding materials used and the layout they consider suitable for approximately a month's holiday on a campsite.
If furniture gets damaged and replacement parts/panel materials are needed it can be a real problem to source them, and even more so if the motorcaravan is a few years old. A change of layout, even minor can be impractical. Replacement bespoke windscreens on A Class for instance can take weeks, if not months to deliver.

I carried out my own 4th selfbuild rectifying what I considered the shortfalls of the "ready built" motorcaravan. At least as far as I could within the restraints of the 10 weeks I gave the project. The furniture eg isn't solid but thin real ash veneer on edge framing, very light, lighter than Hymer ply. So I kind off practice what I preach!
Just a hobby to get away from a sometimes stressful desk bound job for me, Should add that I don't full time.
