I thought it would be a good idea to add a torque wrench to my tool kit so that I could keep my wheel nuts at the right torque settings.

Buying a torque wrench was the easy bit!!!!

None of my sockets were big enough for the nuts, and I could not find anywhere what the torque settings should be for a Merc 412 twin wheel chassis!!!

Does anyone know what size socket I need and the torque settings????:hammer:
 
On my MB 709d the wheel nuts are 19mm and the torque setting is 170Nm or about 125ft lbs, retorque at 50km. The same setting is given for the lighter versions ie 508d 510 609d so if your nuts are 19mm then it's likely to be the same setting, perhaps will do until you get something more specific.
 
Don't know for sure but check the nearside wheel nuts are or are not anti clockwise/left hand thread. Just a thought because many many moons ago I almost busted my gut on a Ford Transit double wheeler and snapped a stud trying to undo the very same.
 
On the 1992 410D chassis the wheel nuts are handed. I have carried a torque wrench for years. Yes a 19mm nut.

It still didn't save me last winter as I got complacent and didn't recheck them after it had been in the garage for a brake service before setting off to Spain. Just after (5km) crossing the border into Spain I hear a bank and rumble. Suspecting a rear wheel puncture I pulled over onto the hard shoulder. As I stopped the vehicle lurched to the left.

When I got out the skirt was sitting on the wheel which was lying at an angle. The nuts had been coming off all the way down. I had wheel trims that hid the nuts so even looking every day before setting off was useless.

I have now removed the trims and will be fitting the loose wheel nut indicators that you see on waggons.

The bang was the outer wheel passing the end of the wheel studs and rotating. This ripped the valve out of the inner wheel tyre.

Halfords

I have sourced the socket I needed for my van from halfords the bloke was very helpfull, didn't belive me that they weren't a standard size for wheel nuts 24mm on mine, but he brought out a selection of sockets set off the shop alarm and proved me right in the process.:)

Any ideas where one can buy the pointy thinngys which show if a wheelnut is slacking off?
 
Many thanks for that Wooie. As there seems to be a lot of wheelnuts on the T1N Sprinter I had better buy a bag of 100 which I have just found on the WWW.

Half the problem for a newbie at all this is trying to work out what the thing you need is actually called!! Once you have that, it is just a question of splashing the cash and tomorrow (with luck!!) I shall have the wheel nut thinngys!!!

I measured the wheel nuts and they are 19mm "flat to flat" so am off to Halfords to buy a 19mm socket and some Bombay Sapphire Gin (not necessarily in that order!!)

Making the decision to buy The Beast was the easy bit. Making sure I am ready for the Dover - Calais ferry on the 6th Aug is proving more of a challenge!!!

I normally fix large and complicated IT systems for banks and insurance companies. Right now I am contemplating a large bottle of Calgon on my desk ready for the Waste Water Tank Spring Clean exercise this weekend. How the mighty are fallen!!:juggle:
 
The official Merc dealer info for a 1996/1997 T1N Sprinter 412D is 19mm wheel nuts and 180Nm torque at +/- 10Nm.

Many thanks to you all for your help. Life will be a lot easier if the wheels stay attached to the vehicle!!!:wave:

I should add this is assuming you are using the original MB steel wheels. The torque settings do not apply if you are using any aftermarket rims or alloys!!!!!

MB specify graphite paste on the stud threads and rechecking torque after 30 miles, graphite grease is considered grippy. Many vehicles wheel nuts are advised to be fitted to dry stud threads ie no oil or grease, this is because if lubricated the usual end result is a risk of overtorqueing. A thin coating of copaslip on the wheel contact area (drum or hub) helps prevent the wheel rusting and seizing. Wheel nuts should be tightened in a diagonal pattern in 2 stages. How much heed of all this the average Quikfit Fitter takes is anybodies guess lol.

Mine is the 410D. No it has the spacers between the wheels and also under the nuts. I have replaced all of the spacers and the nuts on the rear wheels.

I had to replace one wheel in Spain and a used one supplied by the tyre fitting firm in Irun was 50 euro. I tried to locate another on the UK and they were like rocking horse dropping. I was quoted £109 + VAT and delivery from Breakers Yard for a used one. I went to the Merc dealer and got a brand new one imported VOR from Germany (made in Spain) for £109 over the counter.

The centres of the two damaged wheels had gone oval as had the stud holes with coming loose.

The suggestion of putting Calgon water softener in to the waste water tank as a cleaner does work!! My Hymer has a 90L waste water tank so instead of draining the tank before leaving site for a trip this weekend, I filled it with a few buckets of warm water with added Calgon and then drove to Brighton and then on to Battle.

The road surfaces are getting so bad that it was all shook up when I arrived and when I drained the tank a lot of muck came out, and that was far dirtier than the last time I drained the tank about three weeks ago.

I might give it another dose of Calgon in about three weeks time when I have the next trip planned..
