How old can 'Fresh' Water be?

Id say to err on the side of caution and change, recycle the water in the garden or similar. 😀🌱

Use of Aqua Sol

I read with interest the use of water from storage tanks and containers, my Motor home has a 120 litre fresh water tank. I am new to motor homing and camping (recently retired) and keep the tank topped up and use aqua sol liquid or tablets according to the manufacturers instructions and would like to believe this will keep my water in best condition, I use the water for everything and drink it cold from the fridge. I live in West Wales and we have lovely soft water and I do like to keep it filled with local water as much as possible. I hope I am not putting too much faith in "Aqua Sol"and would be interested to hear other peoples views?

Why treat water that has already been treated?

The water you draw from the mains tap has been chlorinated to ensure there is no risk in drinking it. Regular emptying and refilling of your on-board tank is all that is necessary to maintain it. You can drink the tank water in safety.

I would advise that the tank be left empty when the 'van is not in use.

We usually seem to get home with the fresh water tank less than 20% or so full. I drain off a bit more and then add fresh. But we don’t drink the fresh unless it’s boiled, other than for teeth cleaning.

No idea whether that’s good or bad practice but we’ve survived.

We probably get more germs sharing our space with a smelly, filthy, dribbly dog.

Having watched what Bear Grylls drinks I doubt a bit of stale tap water is going to do too much harm. I suppose if you have been brought up in a sterile environment not taking on a few iffy bacteria's along the way to build up resistance, then yes, there could be a problem?

When we were kids we would take provisions (jam butty and bottle of pop) and go off adventuring all day. When it came time to eat we would wolf down the food dirty hands an all, bit of dirts dint do us any harm. It’s a problem for youngsters now though as they are growing in too sterile conditions

and we drunk from a stream when we ran out didnt worry about the bug cow poo and whatever was in the water
well the do say would you drink the water knowing that fish have sex in it

Water stored for any more than 5 days can become contaminated, but to some extent it depends on how you store your water, and where you live.

After about 24 hours tap water loses its chlorine leaving it susceptible to bacterial infiltration.
Also if daylight is allowed to get to water harmful algae can form soon after the loss of the chlorine.

If you add Elsans Elsil to your water the manufacturer reckons it will be safe for about three weeks.
Only 10ml per 100 litres is required. You can purchase on amazon or ebay.

But to be honest I would not keep water for any longer than is absolutely necessary.

If you wish to reuse water bottles empty them on your return rinse them out then store them upside down with the cap removed until dry within.

.....and poo in the water along with millions of insects who also die and rot, not forgetting bird poo, rotting vegetation, all sorts of pee and goodness knows what else.

I reckon a McDonalds is a lot worse for you than the above.

We take for granted clean water, in many poorer parts of the world people are suffering terrible illness and dying due to drinking polluted water, that in many cases looked perfectly fine. (3.4 million deaths a year)
It’s not just drinking water that can cause concern, when showering with infected water the steam when inhaled can cause several including fatal diseases. You play the water roulette game at risk, take care.
Google water borne diseases and how to avoid them.
Taking the appropriate care is simple and cheap, take care.
