How much?

We are one and the same as you Giraffe,a man after me own heart.:)

ya trucks nicer than my company car :(
yes I'm jealous ;)

The amount of people on this forum with nice bikes also makes me very very jealous, I did work out once how many really nice bikes I could have bought for the same money as the MH cost me but there lies insanity.

How old are you and your family?
I guess with kids in tow in motorhome full timing you will be after a pretty big motorhome:cool::)

A message to you full timers out there.
How much does it cost to full-time each week minimum?

Ask the easy ones first, eh?? How long is a piece of string?

We technically do not full-time but as near as dammit. My sister lives in our house, which we stay in very occasionally (nowhere near as much as the three months plan when we started out seven years ago). She therefore takes all the housing costs away from us (Council Tax, Fuel, TV licence etc) but still leaves us with an address. The cost of taxing, insuring and maintaining the motorhome comes to around £1,000 per year. As for the rest of it, I imagine your food and drink bill will be the same as it is now (and cheaper everywhere in Europe except Scandinavia), your diesel bill will depend on how far you travel (we tend to spend between £1,000 and £1,500 per year but we often end up in Greece, Spain or Morocco) and your camping fees will depend on how often you want to stay onsite (this year we have spend around £1,000 by wildcamping half the time).

In the seven years we have been on the road, we rarely average more than £1000 per month over the year (that takes into account everything) and mostly less. We are retired, there are two of us and we do not stint on enjoyment. You could do it for a lot less if you travelled less far afield, stayed less on campsites and didn't have a bottle of vin rouge with every meal!).

Two items of capital expenditure I would recommend are a solar panel to recharge the leisure battery (its a good excuse to follow the sun, if nothing else) and a refillable gas system rather than exchangeable cylinders. We have a Gaslow system which has cut our bills to between a quarter and a third of what they used to be and has paid for itself in 18 months.

Happy travels.

Coolasluck it seems your question has stirred emotions !!!......perhaps an easier question next time ;)

Serioulsy it is interesting in sharing perceptions, and even after best part of 18 months I am still well and truly on the learning curve...but thats half the fun

I average £80 per week. It includes everything one can think of through a normal day. Yes it includes, fuel, gas for bottles, tabacco, newspapers. I of course, do not pay a single cent for camping. I cook once every 2 days, occassionally I cook a meal for 3 days. Curry & rice, Stews, Chinese and the like. (fridge and reheat) I shop only from Lidl's except for bread and drinking water.

Me I'm 45, Nicole is 30 we have 2 kids, Joe 7 and Allison 3 (when we leave) We think its the best age to take em out for a year. Any later and we would not be happy to take Joe out of school, at the moment we can school him in the 3r's ourselves and be confident it won't hurt his education. Our school has been very supportive and will be emailing his work to us which is pretty cool.

We have a Swift Kontiki with awning and safari room

Yes its pretty big, 6 berth and the safari room (where we can use it) gives us an extra room. We could not fulltime for long but 1 year slowly working south for next winter in Spain and Portugal should be achievable. We are seasoned campers, I've been in tents since I was Allisons age and both the kids have grown up camping every couple of weeks.

Still we are realistic and know its going to be tough and we might be home sooner rather than later. Selling the house will focus us on making it work :D We are also spending quite a lot on ensuring we have good brakedown cover etc, without the kids this would not be such a worry.

Probably the same reason I'm sat here trying to finish coding an asset register and doing quite badly at focusing on it ;)

Go for it Giraffe, you know what,i have not heard from anybody who has said to us that they regretted selling up and full-timing,in fact they all say they wish they had done so earlier on.Apart from getting married my 2 favourite periods of my life were mountain biking around california for 6 weeks and then fruit picking when i returned to blighty where i was pitched in a tent. Its Adventure and for me its in my heart and soul.
When in california and arizona i was kipping under underpasses and in bushes and only rarely used a motel! Great days!!:) Dirty smelly tramp like days but loads of fun!!!

Clearly you are as focused as I am! I seem to spend half my life on these forums. Anything to distract me from work!

It is really heartening to see there is still a spirit of adventure alive and well in this politically correct, nanny state. I don`t like sheep!

You are only here once so make the most of it and follow your heart. If it goes pear shaped, well what the hell. If you really work at something and have the guts to stick at it then it usually works out OK in the end.

You can always count on me Coolasluck for a bite to eat, a top up of water, electricity and a shower. Just don`t ask for money:eek:

Interesting Barry how one mans food is anothers poison.!

I have little chance of getting back on the property ladder, and the reason for my meagre budget is each penny I spend there is no income stream to replace it. So one tends to become focussed.

Interestingly , I have often wondered about a career in IT. Working remote on a laptop etc ....I suspect it is a little harder than that.

But on face value seems a good way of providing a few quid, whilst enjoying the peace and quiet of a field.

Hey

what happend to the pub?

J

another option is to work on campsites while travelling we did this in france average 3 hours per day cleaning toilets shower rooms ect. you get no pay but you get a pitch and electric free.

I dont even clean the toilet here let alone one in France. You would have to pay me at least £200 per hour to clean a French bog. I love the French, dont get me wrong but there loos are minging!

Well I got a little confession. today offered work in the Ardeche from next April and yes it includes scrubbing the occasional bog

Anybody looking for a spare pair of hands between now and then ?? ...

I am adaptable hard working and willing to do my best
