How many of you good people are CCC Members?

hi people

just weighing up the benefits of joining the caravan and camping club, stayed on a couple of sites during the summer and was asked if I had membership, although we should be wilding, we do have to conform for the odd night now and again, so is it worth joining?

most of you may have now seen a pic of the Green Goddess, not your run of the mill motorhome, we had problems finding a site near weston super mare after a race weekend at Weston Zoyland airfield, were refused at three different sites, even had a wash and a shave before trying the last one, and still sorry no room at the inn, the bus does have a hint of new age, just got back from Glastonbury about it, but, if I join the "CLUB", I should have the upperhand when turning up!

any thoughts?

Were members for three reasons,

So that we can use their vast network of certified locations, these are farms and similar that allow camping very often for between £8 - £11 a night sometimes with hookup, there are normally out of the way and quiet, we don't use their main sites as I find them expensive and noisy.

You can purchase insurance, breakdown etc through them cheaper and if not thru them many companies offer a discount for being a member.

Finally when holidaying abroad they offer certified campsites and discounted ferry crossings.

If you take out insurance and go to France on the ferry you will have saved more than the cost of joining, Mainly tho for reason 1 you are always within a couple of miles of a CL

The caravan club offers similar we have used both but personally just like having proper campers in tents etc around us and not just caravans, we have more fun on CCC sites

i agree with you iam a member of the c@cc been one since caravaning days. if

C&cc

I find the C&CC members less "keep up with the Jones's" which sounds like it may suite you better. It realy is The Friendly club they claim it to be.Try a regional meet.,or rally. There are a lot of motorhome members.

The downside of the 2 main clubs (I have not tried The Motorcaravers Club)is their own sites get booked up way ahead,so spur of the moment trips are a problem.I usually use the CS & CL small sites.

You often get a free night voucher if you join up at a show.

Try to look at both club's magazine.&websites.I may give you a flavour for which one would suite.

C&CC member here...

letoys... your main advantage is that you will be able to book ahead.. on line :)

so when you turn up it's booked and paid for... not likely to be turned away...

regards ;)

... and i've turned up 40ft long (with a box van) which they have always helped me with
p.s... i did tell em in advance on the booking form

Ex C&CC member here, I have booked and paid in advance AND turned away as I was over 26 feet!, so its not just the type of van but the size will be used as an excuse if they don't want to park you on the grass.

I am a member of both CC and C&CC I have never had a problem. I am 7m (24ft) plus a trailer making the unit over 30ft.

I often use CL or CS sites out of preference but do also use the main sites. I book these on the day by telephone and have not yet been refused or found the staff unhelpfully. I have found some CL sites full though.

I am also at present the exemption certificate holder for our naturist club and advise British Naturism which is also an exempted organisation. Both these groups hold the same exemptions as the big two. Not many clubs (10 in fact) hold all of these exemptions.

I intend joining the Motor Caravaner's Club in January, although I do not need to be a member to use their CL sites. I hope to be using the Practical Caravan Motorhome Stopovers that are run in conjunction with this club.

I am a member of both CC and C&CC, get some good bargains with them both, i.e foreign travl, breakdown etc. Also do some of the CC rallies and holday rallies. Very good

We are members of both, giving a very good coverage of large and small sites, we only joined due to finding a very nice site in south Devon which we wanted to stay on for a few days (C&CC), then when going to Ironbridge our friends were staying on a CC site for the bank hol.

So you will find around 4 days on any site works out at breaking even, after that you're in front!

If either of you are over 55 the C&CC with age concessions works out cheaper than the CC. The CC is a bit snootier than the other lot who even let tents in! (That'll raise a few eyebrows and cause some replies I'm sure!) A mate has a home built/conversion and when visiting the CC they tactfully said "I don't think this is the club for you sir, if you would like a full refund we'll be more than happy to oblige!" He declined the offer, but when he got home there was a letter from the CC asking him to submit photos of his van! (God knows what they'll think of his 'new' ambulance conversion!?!).

Both clubs offer good booking services, discounts, help, insurance, handbooks, websites etc. As for next year... well we WILL remain with the CC but not so sure of the C&CC, they have less regimented campsites but do suffer sometimes with families with large tents and hords of kids... being a grumpy old git (so my partner says who's even older than me!) I hate kids on bikes, kids with balls, barking dogs etc... I could go on!

So pay your money and take your pick, they are VERY handy for showers, water top up and loo empty, which they now offer as a motorhome service for £5 if you don't want to stop the night.

The problem here seems to be not so much about being members of the two main clubs but more that your motorhome is not a run of the mill standard one.

Some site owners or wardens feel that if they let one non standard motorhome on, the other site users ( mainly caravanners ), may complain about hippies / travellers etc being allowed on.

I have spoken to site wardens who routinely turn away self build and non standard motorhomes and campers simply to keep the peace with the caravanners on the site.

There are also sites that will not allow any caravan or motorhome on site if its over about 10 years old, especially those sites that have static holiday homes on them, ( lowers the tone don't you know!!! ), and yes, we have experienced this.

Don't really know what the answer is on this one as nothing will change until the snobbery is outlawed.

Best stick to wilding and use a genny for the leccy!!

Statics

Hi Randonneur,

I know a few sites that ask you to move your static off when it gets to 10 years old.

These same sites act as agents to sell you a new or newer static. There is a bit of self interest involved I think.

I have often wondered if they can legally enforce that provision.

as i am now a motorhome owner,i joined up with the c&cc 2 weeks ago.
I shall reserve judgement.

C&cc

I'm a member of both Clubs too but was surprised to be told this weekthat to book a couple of weeks ahead at the C&CC site in Oxford that I couldn't book for a single night, I'd have to book for two.

Is that normal and true of the CC too?

Used to be in the c&cc for quite a few years and was refused onto a few sites because we are a selfbuild so only ever used the membership to get a camping card and cheaper ferry but then found out it was only cheaper by a few pound so left. The first summer we built our van we did a tour down to essex and then across the south coast and back up the west coast using c&cc sites and i pre booked all the sites online and it would not let me book 1 night i had to book 2 so dont know if thats still the case.

Yes we had the same problem this year, they also refused to refund us when we left early. We were in the CC a few years ago and I'm sure they allow you to get a refund if you want to move on somewhere else.

CC&C do a motorhome stopover for about £6 I don't know what this is, maybe its a pitch without any services, does anyone know?

Hi, we are members of the C & C Club, never been on a club site, we use the CS sites and the THS. Never worried about electric as we have a Genny and Solar on a good day, the last one of those was in September, ( for the anti Genny brigade ):D But I would say the better club to join, we were with the C Club about 25 years ago, then only used club sites a few of times, I don't like the can you move over 4" your not on your PEG. Bob.:D

See: The Camping and Caravanning Club - Motorhome Service Points
We use them from time to time - quite useful.

thanks Andy, I should have looked it up myself :)
Seems a useful service but rather expensive, you would think that given you have paid a membership they could do it cheaper. After all if you can only stay for 3 hours how many showers can you take and using the washing machines is going to cost you extra on top of that :(

We are in our 22 nd year as CCC members and think it is a great club we rally a lot with D A s, usually no booking required and also the temporary Holiday sites, same as a rally really but for longer periods, The clubs main sites are good but we only use them ocassionaly. RAC membership is cheaper with the club as is insurance and ferries . Their system of certified sites and 5 van sites are great. as for snobbishness that someone refered to I have NEVER encountered it, we do not get involved in the politics of the sections or the inevitable cliques as we prefer to do our own thing and in the CCC this is possible and no problem.
The Club also organise foreign travel and rallies in Europe. these are great and a great way to start an European adventure if new to it all as all can be organised for you. If you have children or Grand children the club welcomes them and lots of things are organised for them .
