How did you?.............

Had a narrow boat ... now have a motorhome.

Never paid to moor the boat when on my travels - so why do it with a 'van?

I had a fad on mini's in my youth and got fed up of having to curl into a ball in the back seat.
I met a friend from school who i had not seen for a few years who owned a VW T2 camper, after saving hard for 12 months paid £1300 for one of my own,a tin top (no lift up roof).
I put in in for a respray and over the next few months i spent a lot of time on campsites with my then partner and my son,i then bought a viking VW t2 with the big lift up roof and had more storage space so started wilding.
I have owned 12 t2's and a T25 restoring them and selling them on but used most of them for wilding before selling, had some lovely times around cornwall with myself, partner ,son and 2 poodle terier cross dogs, great times.

Hi, Sort of drifted into it. 1958 I was 14 & in boarding school. Two of us were offered a chance to go cycling in Ireland in return for 2 weeks work of general cleaning & painting during the holidays.

We travelled on the cattle boat, left Liverpool at midnight, & arrived in Dublin at 6 in the morning. We hired the bikes & covered most of southern Ireland sleeping in a tent. Never stopped travelling since.

1958 Cheltenham - Liverpool - Dublin return, £2.19.6.

How it started

Wilding runs in my family - my father travelled from the UK to Kenya in 1947 in a pre war Hillman (I think) with a blow torch for cooking.
My first wild camping expedition was in 1960 at the ripe old age of 14. I cycled, on my own, from West Cornwall to West Sussex, camping in fields on the way. A couple of years later I was polishing my thumb, along with so many others of that time and traveled all over the UK. Then came marriage and kids = trailer tent mostly on sites - her indoors likes the security of knowing she is somewhere that camping is approved. After the kids left home I converted a Fiat Ducatto which we used to travel to Spain, mostly wilding, to visit our daughter. She was married in Spain from this Fiat - 10 couples and an "audience" of 3,000, but that's another story. For 10 years or so we mostly holidayed in hotels and visiting our son in Hong Kong / Dubai / Singapore, but now I've retired I've got a demountable on a Ford Ranger which can get farther off the beaten track than the average M/H. Unfortunately herself is still working and is still uncertain about wilding so I'm mostly on my own. Meanwhile, and to keep said son on his toes, I keep threatening to turn up on his doorstep in the Far East in the demountable, but I will ever get that organised????????????????

I started wild camping after arriving at Old Hartley C.C. site (for the first time after changing from a caravan to a motorhome), I looked round and picked a pitch, however when the warden saw I had a motorhome she said that they wanted that pitch for caravans and tried to give me a small back corner space. I told her to cancel my booking and left. I spent the night in a small car park furher up the coast near where the wind turbines now are. In the past 11 years I have only spent three nights in sites, the rest either wild camping or aires.

Hi All,

I am relatively new to "wild" camping - always loved the out door life. Took the kids Tent camping (wife would never come with us).

But cost of Camping has gone up so much - I paid £40 per night up in the lakes in 2009 -never again.

Loved going to France, and realised that we could see so much more of the place in a Motorhome.

Looking forward to our first Euro Tour in the Moty later this year - but have found (thanks to this site) great place in the UK.

Hi alf,as you said loads of room, mine was the early one with the roll out bunks and the original lower interior had been removed and re fitted with the moonraker units so even more room to move about.I only paid £250 for it (16 years ago) and after a bit of welding, refurbing the breaks and respray it owd me £875.I sold it 2 years later for £1750 and bought a mercedes 508 for a change.

Drive landrover to West German border.
Dig holes and wait for the Red Army.
Go home when they don't turn up after 2 weeks.

Similar Story, Mini Headcase and tired of slepping in tight quarters at Mini meets and shows. Bought a 1967 Split Screen Bus and restored it with basic coversion inside. Sold that and imported a Toyota Hiace from Japan. Driving through on our very first holiday in France in 2005 and wondered "Why then those guys be Parked there??". Realising that the French love campers, built the next van with all the features inc shower/toilet and never looked back!! Get asked by customer why I do it, answer = the freedom of being able to Stop anywhere (Well within reason ;)). Parked at Christmas (-12 deg) at friends cottage in Polzeath, had fab time.
