How are you coping with this cold snap.

Just wondering what tricks people use to help stave off the cold during this cold snap I rely on my blown air central heating and a good fixed in place gas fire. Plus a throw over when I am sat still to prevent any drafts, The bed seems to be fine a good duvet and keeping the mattress and the bedding off the side wall stops condensation with the body heat transfer causing damp. I keep the bedding and mattress away from the wall by placing empty plastic water bottles against the wall and pushing the mattress against them. I do not tuck the bedding between the bottles and mattress but lay it over the top so not to trap the heat in under the duvet. I have also lined some of the cupboards mostly where i store my clothing with the silver lined foam underlay that you use when laying a wooden floor
carpet on the floor helps. I also find hanging a full-length curtain across the back of my van stops the drafts coming from the air vents behind my fridge and from the side door and shower area.

Hi ya Flyboy, Yep sounds like what your doing works a treat for you, I don’t know if you have had a look at ‘Pros & Cons’ thread or put ‘Heating’ in the search box to see what popped up ,,Might be worth a try matey.

It’s always good having as many ways to do most things when you rely on it, Because if one source was to go down, Run out or whatever!, especially as your a Livaboard & things like Heating/ Cooking/ making a cuppa is SO so important (well it is for me anyway !).

we also use the silver insulation (quite thick stuff) between the bed and the side of the van....tuck it well down so cushions mattress and bedding does not touch the sides.

keep warm and well

I like the bottle idea too
They could be universal to save you getting out of a warm bed then could double up as hot water bottles :lol-049::lol-049:

Hi,it sounds to me like you have to many drafts ,I find ventilation is better at the top of the vehicle and not lower down when heating the van,I have truma blown heating but don't use it as I think it makes a drafty van more susceptible to condensation.my solution is a free standing gas fire and crack open the skylight.

2kw fan heater left on full all night !
And it won't be going off anytime soon

Hi ya CC,
I take it that you on EHU for you to be able to do that !.
Or have you got a sufficient on board power supply to sustain & replace usage/Power Drain ?.

I have to say, sounds cosy matey

I have to say, where I was parked up last night (Just outside Tonbridge Wells) it was by far the coldest night at a SUSTAIND -6°C + a bit of windchill that made it feel colder.
Nesty kept the Nest at around +18°C aboard But I did notice that I had to feed it more regularly to maintain That at around 6 lumps every 30/45 mins,,(Granted I only use small lumps due to the size, But it’s not about its size, it’s how it’s used !). The last feed for it was around 00:30 after I finished watching a movie, But It was however out & Only ‘Hand Warm’ At 08:00 this morning with an internal temp of +13°C in the Main saloon area & +10°C in the Aft cabin.

Coffee time me thinks, Then Doors open, Air & Good clean Through day today, But will wait until it’s warmer to do my washing I think lol lol

For any singletons CMC and I believe C&CC charge sites per person , off season and mid week I was paying as little as £7 per night at Clumber Park ( couple of years ago) Considering EHU is included and heating on practically all the time cheap as chips really. Heated shower blocks another benefit.

Keeping vans warm of course is possible but it contradicts itself in the sense for the gas there are strict ventilation requirements so airflow and of course cold airflow enters the van.

Still I can think of worse ways to spend a winters day, M1 or M62 for a start.

We have tried keeping the blown gas heating on a low setting a few times now while overnighting in freezing temperatures. I don't think we'll do it again. Despite having it set as low as 7 degrees, it's just too warm in bed when under the quilt. Aside from using a lot of gas, it also keeps waking me up when the Truma kicks in. Luckily we can set the heating on timer to come on just before we get up on cold mornings. No like the old days when the missus had to quickly get out of bed to switch it on. Well, she was closest!

Right,,,Well,,,To my way of thinking- if Someone is sharing the Heat, Then They should contribute to the fuel, So I’m sharpening My Chainsaw to make it easier for her tomorrow !.

Yes Zombies have a soft side !.

I know it is a one-off, and I'd been drinking, but I got back to the van at 0230hrs and it was 0.5C inside. I slept in socks, T, fleece, beanie hat, sleeping bag and blanket. Heating was clicking on and off (mostly off - lowest possible setting on propex HS2000) and I was warm enough. Going to the toilet was a bit fresh though lol. I slept in until 1030 as well - it was quite a good mate's birthday :)

It is well known Charlie has a 50W solar panel, keeps him topped up throughout the winter
