Hot water problem

Hello, we have an N reg Hymer B544 and last holiday (3 weeks in Germany) we had no hot water because the water was pouring out of the bottom of the van instead of the tap when we turned on a hot water tap!!!

I think I can see a small piece of piping sticking out of the underneath of the van, but not too sure! Cold works fine, although pressure in bathroom is a bit low. Anyone had the same problem - would rather try and sort it myself than expensive repair man!!!

There is a (winter) drain off valve on the tank. Has this been knocked somehow into the open position? Mine opens when vertical but is closed when horizontal.

Does the water just come out when the hot tap is opened or when any tap operates the pump?

It could be a loose hose connection. Try the jubilee clips.

Hi,
sounds like a loose joint or burst pipe in your hot water supply pipe from pump to tap.

Happy Camping:)

Does the pump run for a longer period when you try to get COLD water from the tap, does it spit and splutter whilst doing this, if so it indicates that the emergency dump valve is in the open position. this valve protects the water heater from freezing and will open at low temperatures to prevent freezing and empty the water heater. It will also open if you have a flat battery or disconnect the 12 volt supply accidently, check the valve and close it if in the open position and then refill the system in the usual way. if the valve is faulty and re opens you can put a clothes peg around it to keep it in the closed position. Hope this helps .

The cold tap works fine, just hisses and splutters when you swivel it to hot (and my hubby just happened to be outside when I was trying it and saw the water pouring out from underneath). I've checked the winter valve/drainage tap is in it's correct position (at least I'm fairly sure it is!).

I notice it says in the manual (a rather generic model one) that it's ok to run the heating without water in the hot tank - does anyone know if this is ok?

Yes you can run the gas heating without water in water heater and the dump valve position should be UP.:):)

Thanks for the tips - this site is great - I can see myself losing hours :):):):)

Isn't this the same as a recent thread re: Truma heaters? That one was the pressure relief valve blowing and venting the hot water overboard. (piece of clear tubing running from the hot water pipe to the outside - seems to be a one time safety valve like you find on some domestic showers)

Assuming a conventional plumbing setup, if either the pressure relief valve was blowing off or the air inlet valve on the heater was faulty or the frost drain was open, the water would either come out all the time, or come out whenever the pump ran regardless of whether it is the hot or cold tap open..

Difficult to see how the reported scenario could arise.

Fraid not - water doesn't get as far as boiler to get heated :)

Water leak

I don't know about the N reg Hymers but the slightly later ones have a dump valve and two small nylon drain valves that you must use in Winter to get all the water out of the taps and pipes,I have had to replace both of these drain valves, once because they are very easy to over tighten and I twisted it off and the other because there is a very small "o" ring in the valve and this just decided to split one day and start leaking , if you have these ( usually
White nylon valves , you should be able to see them below the boiler) and the water is comming out of the little drain pipe it is almost certaily the valve .

If you have a Trauma system it sounds like the frost valve has 'popped' up, look in the heater/boiler area for a valve with a red knob - pull upwards. If the cupboard is warm enough it will stay up, ours 'pops' quite a few degrees above freezing and when it's really cold I have to warm it with a hair drier to get it to lock... or fit a clothes peg under the head of the knob!

We use a rather cunning laser cut gag which fits into the handy groove. Not recommended by truma, but prevents embarrasing puddles.

Are you cunning enough to cut a gag that will fit AJ?

You will be very popular if you can. :D:D
