Hob shield

In my Hiace because its compact the hob is very close to the rear seats (soft furnishing) so fried bacon can't be on the menu:( anyone got any ideas on some sort of screen? Ta.

This thread requires a piccy!

In the past on caravans & boats I have used a metal flap that folds down over the hob when it is off & lifts to protect the furnishings when cooking.

It will need 2 sections, the main one hinged along the bottom to the edge of the hob & a smaller side piece hinged to the main so that it comes out at right angles across the back of the hob to support the vertical main section. If the side piece is cut at a slight angle at the lower edge then the main plate will lean in a few degrees & be stable.

Piano hinges can be rivetted to an alloy (or brass or s/s) plate for a simple d-i-y jobbie. There will be suitable thin plate at you local scrappy for little more than its scrap cost. Most D-I-Y shops have piano hinge you can cut to length, but be aware that it will only be brass plated so it will start to rust after a few years use.

See what I mean about needing pictures?

Or you could use 2 seperate panels one across the back & one across the side with a lug near the point where they meet so that they hold each other up but fold flat one over the other when not cooking.

Hob Sheild

Go round a few dealers look for a pre 2003 Auto Sleeper these had aluminium hob shields fitted you will get an idea of how to make one

We have similar problems though ours is more to do with being being persnickety about cooking foods in the van if we can't have all the doors and windows open. Even-then the smell of stuff like bacon or curry persists.

I cook bacon very slowly in a pan that doubles as a fry-pan but it has a tight-fitting lid with a vent. Once the water has been cooked out of the bacon it crisps up quite quickly. We have found this to be acceptable if the windows both side can be opened.

If the weather means we can't open windows or doors then we eat other stuff.

A cheap easy fix would be to drape a small fire blanket over the upholstery when you cook. Blanket could then be washed after each trip.

You would need to check the instructions which came with the blanket though.

We use a frying pan cover ..

Used to use one on the boat as well .. Keeps the splatters down but you still get the smell ....... About a £10 from John Lewis and others.

Looks a simple job to use a foot of piano hinge & an alloy plate to lie over the existing cover, leave a small tag sticking out of the far, top side & make a small slot to fit it in the existing cover to hold it upright when in use. Take care to cut it straight & maybe curve the corners & file them neat to make it look tidy.

A pleasant afternoon's pottering.

Before cutting to size, you may need to think about how high the fat splatters jump . . .

If appearance is very important &/or your diy skills are limited, consider a right angle bend at the bottom so it lies underneath the existing cover & is stepped in slightly at the base when raised.

One of the lads on the delica forum has used a side from a computer tower, doesn't look the best but its free as everyone has old pc towers in the loft.

Don't they?

Hob Splash Guard

Hi Frontslide Here is some photo's of the Hob shield in our van the height of the upstand to the piano hinge is to allow a straight fold on to the top of the hob, the fold on the top corner line up with the glass hob cover to act as a way of holding up straight this could be left straight as it only works when the van perfectly level. We have a square nylon bag that goes over the Glass Lid and keep a hand towel around the splash guard to prevent rattles
