Hiring out your home on wheels...

I know that a few people make an income from their camper or motorhome when they're not using it by hiring it out. I kind of had that idea in mind when I finally took the plunge, thinking that it would offset some of the cost.

Anyway, I'd only had the thing two days when the couple next door saw me out in the street and invited me in for coffee. I no sooner had the mug in my hand than she asked me outright: 'Can we borrow it for a weekend? It wouldn't be until after Christmas, and we'd pay you for it.' You'll notice, as I did, the absence of the word 'please' in there. I was too stunned to offer much more than 'Erm, well, possibly... but can I just see what I want to do with it first?' Yes, I know... I should have said 'Fer gawd's sake, give us a bloody chance to try the thing out first!'

Well... 10 weeks down the line, I'm certain of one thing. No one else is going to use it unless they nick it! It's like an extension of my own home. I've cleaned it up, completely recarpetted it, spent money having a few jobs done. I don't WANT anyone else using it. I don't think that's selfish. I wouldn't rent my home to anyone else, so not my motorhome, either.

From what I've observed of these neighbours, they aren't the tidiest of people. I shudder to think what mess they'd make in my Li'l Darlin'. Personally, in retrospect, I think they had a bloody cheek!

Am I just being too possessive, do you think?

remember theres only 1 letter between " TO LET " and " TOILET "
i deffinatly woudnt let mine out:scooter:

I think it depends on how you use it.

Most people on this forum are experienced motorhomers who use their vans all year round. So of course you are going to get negative answers.

However, I drive and walk past many people's houses and their vans seem to be permanently on their drives. I shudder to think how often these people actually use their van bit it can't be more than two or three weekends a year. There can't be much personalisation at that level of usage. For them, they have a £30,000 investment gradually depreciating doing nothing, so if they could sort the insurance out, it may be worth it to do letting. I'd still be worried about damage though, and how they would recover money for repairs. They'd need a very tight system in place.

My niece and her husband are like that. They've got a £20,000 MH which they hardly ever use. It looks good, though, and they had the cash to spare... so I think that's what it's about. Funny thing is... they make a living out of renting out a couple of houses they've bought!
