Highway robbery???????????????

I did read something a LONG time ago when the Motorways were first built the services were given as a concession to the operators providing that they gave the government a sum (10% I think is the figure) on all TURNOVER over £100000 per year. That was a high figure in the late 50s early 60s and takings were near to that for the year. However I would think one day if , would do it now . Fuel then was 4/6p per GALLON so the same restriction still stands now????? That probably accounts for the standard rip off prices the fuel turn over is a LOT bigger now and the costs way out of site. The original figure is probably still standing and the Treasury is raking it in, even if most fuel costs are tax anyway, just another tax on top of the other taxes.

Seeing as nobody else seems to have mentioned it I will share :)

Gloucester services (same family owners as Westmorland/Tebay) give you 3 hours free parking so you have have an extra long shower but these are closed at night.

If you spend a certain amount in the shop/cafe/restaurant you get 10p a litre off fuel

both of these two services do seem to be full whenever i call in... they are expensive for meals and their fresh food outlets (local farm produce) are not cheap but the quality is very good and worth paying for - unlike many other services which are franchised unoriginal fast-food rubbish and expensive outlet selling rubbish

On some motorways there are signs displaying the price of fuel at the next 3 services.
The 3 prices are the same.
What a waste of money on digital signage just to confirm price fixing!

Yes on our news about 6 months back, these amazing new signs put up on the M5 somerset area to help motorists.

ALL SHOWING THE SAME PRICE It beggars belief:mad1:

i rest my case on price fixing !!!!!

For clarity I was debating food . Agreements over fuel no idea other than we had a filling station on the A1 at Wentbridge just south of Ferrybridge Moto and were lucky to make more than a penny a litre and there was certainly no mutual fixing with them going on cant speak of the wider network but even in towns prices are market driven

I'm not sure about this "price fixing" argument. All of the services are owned by three operators, who would naturally charge the same prices in all of their outlets just as a supermarket chain would be expected to charge the same for a pint of milk in all its stores. I accept that fuel prices in supermarkets vary, but fuel is a "come on" thing and it has to be cheaper than the local competition. There is no need for that on a motorway, you are a captive audience, just like the bar in a concert, take it or suffer the consequences.

Ok, not all of it is motorway, but the prices at services on the A1 can vary enormously. (The OP is about Wetherby on the A1).

I live just off the A1 and travel it regularly prices can differ by as much as 5 or 6p per litre.
