I know that Dick Turpin was from York area but there are new kids on the block now. The services on the A1 at WETHERBY they are awful. I was low so I thought I would get some fuel on board, but what a horrible place. I queued to get in went around the park got turfed out as the man said there were 4 others waiting so went around to get fuel. It looked like a height barrier on the car pump area so went around again to the truck pumps. I needed a fuel card unless I left my card there for verification whilst I filled my 5 gallons. 5 Gallons you say, well at the price they wanted of 149.9 a litre I was NOT going to buy more than that. just enough to get to another friendlier place at Doncaster where I was going. THAT PRICE is absolute robbery but it is because they are the only fuel in the area that is obvious.. I did not give them me card or pay up front as that is an insult. I did find that I can do a lot more miles after the low fuel light comes on but I did have 20 litres in the garage just in case. I suggest that you forgo going to that service for anything, it makes interesting reading of the reviews for them. Basically the reviews all say the same thing. ROBBING BAXXARDS.
 
i have not bought fuel from a motorway services for years. if i think i am a bit low i will stop at the services and ask my satnav how close the nearest fuel station is and its frequently just a few miles away.

the food is usually s h i t e as well..... except for gloucester services and the one in the lakes..... which do have lovely organic food shops even if it is expensive its good quality - as is the restaurant
 
Never buy fuel in s station lol.

I'd have used their car park to get the fuel out of your garage ;)
 
Motorway services are for reps or businessmen on expenses, not the likes of us.

They don't care what food or fuel costs, coz they ain't paying. I pretty much never use motorway services, there is nearly always a cheaper source of food and fuel nearby.
 
some services have free showers - so you can park up make a cuppa in the van have a free shower and use their facilities...... turn the tables !!
 
Surely moaning about the cost of services is like complaining that Harrods is expensive ....

I'ts no secret that both are expensive AND no one is holding a gun to your head to visit them .....
 
There is a Morrisons filling station close to there. For future reference.
 
We've used motorway services recently, mind we only put a fiver in, enough to get us back home without worrying we were gonna run out, but like you say highway robbery. If we needed more we would Google petrol stations nearby, there's nearly always one fairly close.

Harrods is not that expensive although you can buy very expensive items not found elsewhere.

After looking for many years I managed to get a Royal Doulton figurine that had been given another limited run by the factory (its final revival). Harrods were given a good share of the limited run and I visited the Store just at the right time.

I feel like I was ripped off a few days ago. I managed to source a little plastic door retainer. It is around 3 cm long and weighs a few grammes. The price was 72p (no problem with that) but the postage was £3.50 which is daylight robbery.

If you enter 'supermarket fuel near motorway' as a search in Google Maps it usually comes up with suggestions close, but off, the motorway.
 
Wife got food poison going down to south coast,bought a fry and the eggs must of been made of rubber,total sh one t.
 
Yes I know Motorway services are bad but he price there is the highest in the country except maybe the outer Hebrides where it is difficult to get it there. The point is that all the other services are dear but not that dear. I wanted a break and enough fuel to get to another station in a town supermarket. The warning message was up and telling me of dire happenings if I did not fill up. It was lying to me as there was actually about 50 miles on the range. I did make the mistake of turning left towards York and not right to Wetherby itself.
 
There is a morrisons just off the A1 at junction 48 Bouroghbridge, that also does lpg and red diesel for those running a night heater from a tank.

Just remember to avoid a free services verruca, it pays to wear a pair of high
heels, I do. Those latest hi heel Crocs should be OK. I'm always mindful
not lurk around too long, some of those truckies give me strange looks.

If you wore Crocs into the shower, surely your socks would get wet??

Only used these showers a few times over the years. The detritus left by
previous occupiers is no encouragement to make it a habit, a wet suit
plus gum boots wouldn't be overkill.

I'd say the wearing of socks with Crocs, would depend on the response you
wanted from a lonely trucker, a turn of a shapely bare ankle can be irresistible,
so I'm informed!

We never top up on motorway services and our Globecar has a 120 litre diesel tank.

There shouldn't be any services on the motorways, only rest areas like they have in Florida, the food and petrol (gas) is made available at service stations on almost every exit and because they are also serving the local people the prices are never much different than any other gas station. The services are a total rip off even MacDonalds' prices are higher than Telford Shopping Centre :eek:
