Highland Council parking

Highland Council are to vote on Monday to ban overnight parking for motorhomes and campervan will update on the vote
There must be more to it than this! They can't expect us to drive for 8 hours (or whatever) through the night.
Is it in Council carparks?

Look for the owner of a campsite or the spouse of one on the Leisure Amenities Committee, or whatever it's called ... Thought Highland Council were proposing a £40pw Pass? Perhaps this will enable M/homers to park 'free' ... ?

I'll save the bother and keep travelling to Europe where the weather is better, plenty of Aires are free, and the natives are generally friendlier ... (y)

This may be the flip side of designated overnight parking spots. Banning overnight in every other carpark.
Seem to remember us mentioning this a long time ago ago Rob🤦🏻‍♂️🤷‍♂️

They are not the first, Dumfries and Galloway did likewise, but none of which are enforceable without individual TROs. Public carparks are subject to the 1984 road traffic act. But let’s look at the logistics here, Highland region is about one third the size of Scotland, and very sparsely populated. Policing any ban would prove all but impossible. Simply putting up signs stating no overnight parking simply won’t cut it. Overnight in summer months simply does not exist, it never actually gets dark in summer so far north. Whereas in winter overnight could be from 4pm until 9am. What exactly constitutes overnight is debatable.

Overnight = arrive Monday, depart Tuesday - no dispute. Or, as Fife Countryside Trust stipulate, parking free until 10pm, irrespective of season, then overnight fee payable

Fife coastal trust put up signage in some carparks stating times, costs involved, and fines payable if conditions are breeched in line with traffic regulation Orders. And parking is not free until 10 pm, if you stay more than two hours it’s £1-2 in designated carparks. In others they ask for a donation, and request staying only two nights. No overnight signs in public carparks have no legal standing whatsoever.

  • Free: For the first two hours
  • £1–£2: For all day parking, depending on location
  • Free for disabled parking: With a Blue Badge Permit

We were at Ruby Bay last week and things have changed a bit there, so presumably in other Fife car parks as well. It is now free during the day (so none of that getting a ticket for the first free 2 hours!). The only ticket you need to buy is an overnight for £10 from (if I recall correctly but don’t quote me on that as my memory is going!) 6pm to 8am.
Much simpler system than previously. Incidentally for those that haven’t been to Ruby Bay for a while the motorhome spaces have all been moved to the top car parks and are really well spaced out now so no cosying up to the neighbouring van any more.

It’s always been the case that purchasing a £10 overnight ticket covers you for 24hrs.
There was confusion with some thinking they had to buy first a £2 daytime parking ticket then pay a further £10 for overnighting. Last time I was there daytime parking was £2, but I see they have made it free as you say. But this does not apply to all of their carparks, were charges still apply for daytime parking.

Yes they have moved all 7 places to the upper section. Personally speaking I think I preferred it the way it was previously, with four in the lower section, and three at the top. For me with seven vans (or more ) :mad:it looks like an encampment in such a small section of the carpark. Why they did this I don’t know.

The bottom bays are now disabled spaces. They have laid out the upper car park so there are basically only 2 or 3 overnight motorhome spaces around the three sides with a fair distance between each of the spaces. Provided there are no extra vans squeezing in it doesn’t really look like an encampment nearly as much as it used to do.

I forgot to mention that I was chatting to the ranger and he told me that one night last summer when he came down to do his late evening check at Ruby Bay there were 63 (yes 63) vans in the car parks which have 7 official overnight spaces. When will people learn what this sort of behaviour leads to. Unfortunately I forgot to ask him how he treated them!

Sorry but how can squeezing all seven places on the upper section be less of an encampment than spreading them between lower and upper as they used to. There were 7 van up there when we were there last and we clearly dominated the upper section. There used to only be three places.
We have left Elie in 2023 when things got stupid and headed for craigmead. One idiot was planning to spend a week there complete with awning and Barbie. We now only go in winter when it’s a lot quieter.
