HELP !wrong fuel problem

Hi Kimbowbill, Oh I think I read that on here when I was looking for a solution, Our MH is an old one so probably doesnt have half the things on that the new ones have these days, which is sometimes a blessing.
I know my friend ruined a Kia people carrier belonging to his cousin by doing the same except he hadnt realised,as he had just lost his wife and was on route to pick the son up from train station next day he borrowed it and put petrol in without thinking but kept driving and as he approached the station in the center of Durham it broke down, although it was in the garage several times they could never get it back to normal for some reason. hope your is ok now and Im hoping tomorrow we can get ours sorted.

Pat

yes i hope you do too, let us know how you get on, it will be interesting to see what happens, but dont beat ya old man up for it, its easily done,

Jen

Diesel is like thin oil, and a good lubricant. Petrol is not. The main reason petrol in diesel is bad is because it dilutes the lubricating ability of the fuel, which the highly stressed components like the high pressure pump depend on as it is their sole lubrication. Apparently this is not such a problem in old engines, less highly stressed and different material in the seals. As Alan says, up to about 30% petrol should should still give adequate lubrication though.

thank you Bernard, and thats what happened to mine, the pressure pump was totally confused i think, my car has never been the same since, if i get low on deisel, the EM light comes on and the car just stops dead, its awful, each time i fill up now i check, double check and double to check to make sure i've got the right fuel:cool1:

Yep, I agree with VWAlan. You could try and drain off what you put it but if you top right up with diesel chances are you'll be just fine.

Good luck !!!

wrong fuel

thanks again to all, hubby is just getting ready to go and try to sort it out so I will let you all know what happens later this afternoon.youve all given him a glimmer of hope that it will be ok.
catch you all later.

Hi cookie

I put half a tank of petrol into my Volvo Estate (same engine as the VW LT) in Anfield Plain. When I realised I topped up with Diesel. I was going to Loch Lomond for the weekend so just kept on driving. It ran a little hotter but got there OK. It was a bit difficult to start after standing over the weekend. It did start and I filled it up again when I got back to Annfield Plain.

I ran that vehicle for years after with no problems.

wrong fuel update.

Hello All,

glad to report that hubby has managed to get the van home without too much trouble, he could find nowwhere to drain petrol from the tank so took Alans advice making several trips to the garage for diesel then started it up,started 1st time filled the street with smoke then slowly went back to normal so he drove slowly to the garage and put £70 worth of diesel in it and drove slowly home without any hickups he says it seemed to drive as normal so here's hoping it's in recovery. I cant thank you all enough for all the advice and encouragement you gave us to take the plunge and do it ourselves.

now I can start taking the p**s out out of him Alan :D

thanks again.
Pat.

Perhaps a few things that haven't been considered.
First is that driving 7 miles may well have only used up whatever diesel was still in the fuel lines and filters and it is possible the engine has yet to run on petrol.

Second is now the fuel line and system IS full of nearly straight petrol so merely adding diesel to the tank is NOT going to stop the engine sucking on pure petrol sometime soon so at the very least the filter and lines need to be drained and refilled with diesel and the fuel pump reprimed to ensure all the petrol is out.

Third is the free advice being handed out without any liability for the advice being wrong.

That it worked is more good luck than anything else.

hi, in my experiance of running petrol in a diesel vehicle i find the petrol mixes very easily with the diesel. i again repeat you put petrol indiesel in cold climates to stop waxing of the diesel. putting petrol in the older vehicles cleans the exhaust emissions so it can give a better result at the mot. given what the op. as said i wouldnt worry about running it .
mind i still say .drain the fuel keep it . put it in a nice airtight container and pass it on to me i,ll run it in mine ,cant waste it.
try putting diesel and petrol in a jar let us know if it doesnt mix.
cheers alan.

Going to put my tuppenceworth in.

The hubby's van had only about 2 gallons of diesel in it, so I went down to the garage and started to fill the tank, with petrol!!

I didn't notice the mistake untill I had put about 11 litres in. I then had no choice but to drive the 2 mile home praying all the way I didn't break down (this was in winter when no tankers were able to get to the petrol stations to deliver fuel, and this garage had actually run out of diesel).

I then phoned round to find a petrol station stocked with diesel, drove there, and topped up the tank. I can honestly say that all has been well since, and if anything, it's run better than it did!

As long as the mixture is kept around the 25%-30% mark, all should be well. Also, the petrol and diesel will have mixed, so the only way you would have pure petrol in the system is if your tank was empty to start with.

Its ok you sayiong that but, every engine is different, you dont specify what engine you have and how old it is, you only have to google wrong fuel and look at whats happened to some people you was just very lucky, i wasnt so

wrong fuel update

Hello all, Just a quick update, looks like we may have been lucky MH starting 1st time as it normally does and the exhaust fumes are getting back to normal ( very light smoke for a few seconds ).
Hubby on the other hand is still having a bad time his luck has taken a downwards dive today when he got bitten by a dog:mad1: so I dont think he will be putting the lottery on this week :)

thanks again folks

Pat
