Hi

We have bought a motor home and in it is a sat box and on the roof a diamond shaped box that you wind up, there was no tv, we have bought a tv with freeview, so do we just plug that in and forget the sat box and wind up the ariel thing, because when I have done that, it says no signal and I don't know what I am doing wrong, can anyone point me in the right direction, do I need to put their box on, i thought the tv freeview would do the same job, also if I get it working, does a freeview box give freeview foreign channels, when in say spain, i mean spanish freeview.
I would put a sky box in, but from what i read I would need to take a flying saucer with me Lol.
Thanks

depends wether it is a sattelite reciever or an aerial, yes we have beeen told in spain 1.8m is probably the smallest dish you would get away with. freeview is alleged to be transmitted in multiple languages on some channels i suspect this will depend on your reciever as to wether you can get it or not

Hi, I think without seeing a pic that what you have is a german sat dish called a Kathrein, these are used my germans all over as they target europe tv channels, Not our english speaking ones that have a very small footprint.
I have a 65cm maxiview dish and pace free view box, and I must say that its a total waste of time, Can,t pick up anything to far south, nothing in spain, italy, denmark, or even most of germany.
Wanted it for the weather forecasts and the odd film, ended up with dvd,s and local papers.

Hi Terry,

Hi Terry
I have a fully automated Kathrin (square) dish with a Kathrin receiver without the TV. It works perfectly with a German TV in Germany. It is a 12v, 5.0amp set up. My problem starts now, Can I buy an English flat screen digital TV and hook it up and get British TV in Spain or Portugal?? (1) Will I have to reset the receiver to a British frequency, can this be done. (2) Is it possible to reset the frequency. If none of this is possible, do I need to change my dish and/or buy a receiver to work of my Kathrin dish?? I have been to all sorts of people and I don't seem to get the right answers to my problem. Please explain in laymans english what I need to do. It would be most aapreciated

Have you retuned the channels after plugging everything together and switching on? The actual broadcast frequencies are different in different areas of the country. That means you normally need to go into the menu and do an Automatic Search to refresh the channel list each time you move to a new site.

If that doesn't work you may (depending on the aerial) need a booster box to match the aerial and boost the signal.

Hi, In answer, the type of dish you have does not matter, its just the tool that picks up the satillite, In this case size matters not the place of build.
As to the free view book, you should be able to pick from the start up menu if you want English speaking channels or not, As G stated try retuneing the box when you have the dish pointing at the right satillite. You can,t use a booster on satillite signels, its there or not.If the dish is to small or out of alinement to pick the signel up a box will not help the matter.
To be honest the whole satillite thing is a mine field of miss information with tells of getting english signels from the north pole on little more then a 12 inch dish, I am no expert but just find the whole thing a bit of a waste of time and money.
get a good satillite finder and just play with your system, terry

i am also using a similar dish but with sky not freeview
we mostly use the system abroad and the further south you go you might need to re tune the sky dish/box to the south beam
as they tend to revert to the north beam when turned off for a time as this is the default and you need to connect to sky dish at home for your box to recieve updates you did not know existed after allm it is a computer and sky want to make it as hard as poss to use outside the uk
i again refer you to www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk
for a more profesinal answer

sorry i do not know the answer this

Thanks anyway. It doesn't bother me at all as I am German, I am okay with the setup I have but my dear wife is English, I am trying to compromise for her sake. Worst comes to the worst, I will have to load a whole load of video tapes and CD's (English)to keep her happy. ;)

satellite

Hi
Its really difficult this to explain, this is satelitte , so I believe if i want free view i would need a ariel, but if i want sat then a sky box, but the satellite isn't a dish shape, its more like a flying saucer, so you can't tilt it, you just wind it up, i have been looking for a picture of it on the web but can't find one, anyone got any other ideas, i thought i could contact the past owners, but they are either Belguim or German and they may not understand what I am asking, seems a shame to dump it when it may be ok.

Julie, unless I'm misunderstanding something... Freeview comes via a TV aerial and a box, and you do not appear to have an aerial!! I think you just have a sat dish, is there a box as well? Sky comes via the Astra sat' so if using a Sky box you will need a blue card giving more or less the same channels as Freeveiw - that's what we use at home due to being in a poor signal area with no Ch 5.

If you have a non Sky box then you will need to find one of the other sat's such as hot bird, these are all around SSE magnetic, but also at slightly different angles, so if can be quite a pain to set up on a manual system.

Nothing's perfect, we get a FANTASTIC picture in Poole with a £19.99 Asda freeview box and a Status 535 directional aerial, however in Aldeburgh NO Freeview and the odd speckle, but I've seen campers with Oysters cranked up and looking out to sea getting great pictures!!!

So I think you need an aerial for quickness, a freeview box if you want a few more channels, a Sat box & dish if you've got the time and patience to set it up, and if all else fails a TV with built in DVD... or you could always read a book or talk to the other half... but that REALLY is a last resort!!

Nosha you can get a TV with freeview built in but you still need a aerial.
I have a 12volt 8 inch TV built in freeview and a Status antena with a signal booster, its ok in some places and in other places i cant get a signal so i bought a one of those 12 volt camping dish things for satellite freeview from Maplins work great when you get used to setting it up even works in the Lake District.:)

Just noticed ,my 240 volt TV actually runs on 12 volts DC via a transformer, could I rig up a wire to run it direct from my 12 volt system, via a voltage stabiliser, of course? The power input plug has a 4 pin set up:confused: so I think this may complicate things:(

I just rig mine to the batt with a fuse inline never had any bother and the same with all my 12volt things. :)
