Help with private number plate and sorn.

thank you seems as tho thats the only way atm and do it before tax runs out. in a few days time

cannot understand why the donnor vehicle needs to be taxed.. wish someone could explain the logic in it.
wonder who makes these stupid regulations.
To remove a number the vehicle needs to have road tax and mot ( if applicable) to be put on retention. Some plates cannot be removed or retained.
We have 2 private plates 1 on retention with Certificate( cost £250 from dvla ) other 1 on vehicle when we bought it with no retention certificate , I did think to keep it but cant remember the procedure but it did have to be road legal when applying

sooo...it also needs to have an MOT as well as tax to put it on retention?????? was inform it would be £80 to put one on retention???? why did you have to pay 250? wow its complicated......

mot has just ran out and tax runs out end of may in a few days time.....phoned dvla and just keep getting different answers.....ask the same question to 6 different people and end up with six different answers....phew

The £250 was because it was new
This was 2016 so it's all from memory, we also missed out on a 1950' s reg due to the mot rule.

It looks like things have changed a little since I did things.....time fly's by. I should have checked before posting
So it doesn't need tax or mot, though the dvla might make you get it inspected.
Looks more straightforward now

thanks drover
vehicle needs to be OF A TYPE WHICH NEEDS MOT?????????????
sooo this is ambiguous ........it doesnt state it has to have current MOT????
as you have stated above
ohhhh the plot get thicker
its like trying to put a jigsaw together

think easiest thing is to just get it put on retention before tax runs out on wednesday
as Richardhelen suggested in one of the first posts........that gives time to try get it thru mot etc.

It certainly looks like you can do it online if it has a mot and is taxed or sorn.have you tried to fill the online form out?
The retention cert gives you the opportunity to put it on any vehicle younger than the vehicle it came from.

Have just had great fun with mine. I've had it 25 years+ and it's been on at least half a dozen different vehicles which always reverted to original number plate when I took it off. I always keep the number plates so it's just a case of banging them back on and it's all legal and good to go.

However, yesterday I sold my Adria, took the number off and back came the new number - and it's a different blooming number, so I've got to get fresh plates made up, which of course I couldn't do at 6pm on a sunday. So the nice people who are buying it have had to go hundreds of miles home and are coming back to collect later in the week.

I hate DVLA.

thanks for that Caz

so what you are saying Caz. if im reading correct/interpreting correct........
you applied on line to retain private number. so you are then able to put it on another vehicle and on the SAME DAY
had a reply giving you a new number to put on the motorhome which the private number came off.

wow that was quick.......i was reading that it could take 3-4 weeks...i wonder if that was because you have had the private number for so long a time and have changed it many times.....thanks for that info

Exactly that, it's easy to do it online, all you need is the ref number off the latest V5c and a way to pay the £80 - debit or credit card. Takes a couple of minutes. Tells you what the new reg number is (which it assures you will nearly always be the number the vehicle had originally!) It brings up a PDF file of the thing that authorises you to get the new number plates made up so save that to your phone and you can go and get them done and put on straightaway. The new V5c will come through the post but it's usually pretty quick as it's all automated nowadays. This is because you have done all the work inputting the data, which is what took the time because it was done by the DVLA clerks after they received the postal application.

I think I know what happened with mine, on the V5c it says "registered 1.1.04" but then it says "Registered in UK 1.5.04". So originally when it was first registered here after being imported it was given the relevant number for May 2004 with 04 in, but the computer has now decided it has to have the number relative to January 2004 - which is 53, hence why it's given me a new number.

thanks everyone for all the input ....its all been a great help......what wonderful lot you are.....
