vehicle has private number plate.......having problems getting mot due to emissions.....tax runs out end of month......

want to put vehicle on sorn.....until it is either sorted for MOT or decision made on what to do with it.......

been told ........once tax expires and if its not re.taxed ............. then private plate cannot be retained on it.

so if vehicle is sorn.....and there is no tax on it.......private plate will be lost. unless it is re.registered with original plate

doesnt make sense to me......i can understand if it was being scrapped then it would have to be re,registered with original plate. in order to keep private plate

however on sorn the vehicle is still in your possession.

any knowledge or thoughts on this would be appreciated.....many thanks..trixie

The plate will remain on the vehicle even if sorn,
After it has been without mot or tax for 6 months then the number still remains on the vehicle,
But you wouldn’t be able to transfer the number until it has been mot and taxed again,
If for any reason you think the vehicle won’t be going back on the road again, then the best thing you can do is to put
The registration number on retention.
This will cost £80 and can stay on retention for up to 10 years, after ten years you will have a fee to pay to keep it on retention, once you have paid your £80 to put it on retention,
That also covers the cost of putting it onto the next vehicle

We have private plates and when Maggy's car couldn't be taxed because the MOT had expired and we were not at home we sorned it for a long time, over six months later when we returned home we just mot'd and taxed it as normal so I don't see a problem

problem is tezza (mot and tax) no guarantee that it will get thru MOT if emissions cannot be brought down.....in which case wont be able to tax it without mot.//////

Are you sure of that bit? I thought there was another transfer fee from retention, but good news if not (y) (been thinking of putting a retained plate on my MH and was expecting to pay the £80.)

Yes as I have just done it with a plate, and have done it previously

I which case your safest thing to do is put it on retention
thank you seems as tho thats the only way atm and do it before tax runs out. in a few days time

cannot understand why the donnor vehicle needs to be taxed.. wish someone could explain the logic in it.
wonder who makes these stupid regulations.

There was a massive market a good few years back of firms buying classic vehicles and stripping them of their original plates ....
Then flogging the re registered vehicles at a lower price (I visited a warehouse in Manchester FULL of "plate raped" motorcycles and bought a couple of autocycles to restore )
I seem to remember the DVLA having a bit of a sense of humour failure at the process as folks were making big money and the DVLA weren't ....
From memory that's about when the extra MOT requirements came in ....

Amazes me that anyone would want a "private/cherished" plate on their vehicle and line the DVLAs pockets for the privilege ...
BUT each to their own I guess ...

Bloody emissions put a lot of stuff in the scrap yard nowadays, I used to have a friendly MOT man who fudged that bit so long as the van was otherwise safe.

i can understand the logic in emissions......,, less pollution,,,,,.....
..however......
..a vehicle can be used on private land blowing out as much emissions as it wants with no repercussions
even tho its still polluting the atmoshphere?????????

friendly mot man. what did he do?????? stick the rod up another unsuspecting vehicles rear end which was squeeky clean..........lol..,.well done him.

Well the emissions would make more sense to me if the old cars that didn't require tax or MOT were not so polluting.

Not sure what he did, I was usually wandering around the garage talking to the mucky necks.
