HELP!!!!! The blue box,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hi Guys i wonder if you good folks can advise me please,,, guys the blue box of tricks under my drivers seat has begun to play up,, the other day it began to make a horrible electrical ralay creeking noise for around 1min until i took handbreak off then it stopped its done it again whilst driving too it sounds like a relay struggling to do what ever it does,, what exactly does the Blue box do?,, i mean does it control the interier electrics, and charge the L battery?? any ideas why its started to moan & grown please???? also if you look at the larger picture can you tell me what the white little block does it's just loose floating about it has small vents on top,,, many many thanks,

It looks like an Electroblock unit. Maybe an EBL99.

It would help if you gave some details of what van you have and the year.

If it is an EBL then you need to send it to Germany for repair. Brownhills used to do an exchange unit but you paid a lot of money for the service. They have recently closed that branch so Germany is the only option but it is cheaper.

They sound like a door buzzer only slightly higher pitch. It's obviously to gain attention but for what I've no idea, sorry.

It will be an EBL, almost certainly the EBL99.

It controls the 12 volt side of your van which includes charging your Leisure and Engine batteries. Do you not have any instructions for it? If not, I think I have some somewhere. If you look at the fuses on it you will see it controls things like your electric step among other things.

They are susceptible to spikes and surges of electricity. When they fail, there is nothing you can do about it except send it away for repair. I will see if I can dig out the address to send it to.

If you regularly use a hookup on sites, it would be worthwhile buying the Schaudt OV1 unit to add on to the EBL. This protects them from harm. Do a google as you can buy them in the UK for about £70 or £80. I only ever hookup on my drive and so I have never bothered getting one. It will probably cost you somewhere around £300 for the repair, so make certain that it is the EBL. A chattering noise could be a faulty relay. Is there any other equipment beside it? Could that be the problem instead?

BTW, I have no idea what the small white box is. It does not seem to be part of the EBL.

The EBL is the electronic brain of your van and controls many things from your step to charging both batteries.

Check your van and leisure battery voltage, then hook up and check again. If the voltage has gone up then it is working OK in that area. Then do the same but by running the engine instead of using the hookup.Try your step and see if it works. Check all fuses in the EBL to make sure they are OK. If all these work OK then your EBL is fine and it was the buzzer making the noise (and it has saved you a lot of money).

That buzzer could be to remind you that you have not retracted the electric step. The problem with an 11 year old van is that former owners might have added various things from the original setup.

When I hook up to mains my box is making a loud humming noise (very loud) and the lights dim to about half power. Lightly moving the external wires I discovered that I have a break in one of them, not found which one yet but a slight wiggle put everything back in order.
Don't do anything silly but just try moving the wires coming out of the side of the box to see if you have a break. use something like a plastic pen so you don't electricute yourself, don't want that on my conscience over christmas.

Just looked on the other site (god I hate going over there) but apparently this is the makers web site.

And there is mention of them being very helpful and FOC so you may be in luck.

Further reading reveals that there is a known problem with this unit involving a small surge fuse within the box itself that blows but that is something you can ask the makers about.

Hello Mothman,

My take on this problem is I reckon the buzzer is in the handbrake warning light circuit and that's what your noise is.

The Electroblok is a good bit of kit and generally very reliable so if you're not having any bother with the electrics don't mess about with it. You could cause yourself a lot of grief. As was said previously if it's been a modification by the last owner, and because the buzzer is a proper cheapo job it may not have been working but has come to life with a bit of vibration or even a change in temperature.

Just had another look at your pictures and now I'm almost certain the crappy little buzzer is the culprit. It appears to be in series with the feed to the handbrake switch. If that's right then you could either replace the buzzer or just cut the small red and black wires and join the cut ends together, and bin the buzzer.

The red and black wires will be a Neg and Pos feed to the buzzer. Joining them together will cause a short and is NOT advisable.
