Swmbo just informed me of an article on Facebook (I dont do fb lol)about Helmsley car park and due to some selfish motorhomers at the first day of unlockdown using this overflow car park as a campsite with bbqs table and chairs out etc.It seems the Car Park is jointly owned by a farmer. He got anoyed with these Motorhomers and told them to leave. They stood their ground and refused to go.So now they are discussing the closure for motorhomers in the next council meeting.Again the few have to spoilt it for the many.

I think you're putting two stories together. The story about the farmer is somewhere else. The Helmsley story is that they closed the overflow car park (that allowed motorhomes) but people were overnighting in the middle car park. The council are discussing whether to reopen the overflow. I may be wrong of course.

Swmbo gave me the story MAYBE she has got it wrong?

I had a ride up to Helmsley on the bike today and had a bit of a walkabout. All signage about been able to stay overnight have been removed. The overflow car park where overnighting was allowed is now blocked off. The coach/HGV park has a large sign saying only coaches and HGVs may park in coach bays yet all eight coach bays had motorhomes in and no room whatsoever for the designated vehicles that are on the signage and four motorhomes parked across from the coach bays. At least four had tables and chairs out on the grass behind them on the coach bays and two had tables and chairs out on the tarmac towards the center of the parking area that were opposite the coach bays.

That sounds about right. We are getting back to normal it seems.

At least the cafes were working to gov guidelines, Unlike the free for all at Leyburn last week.

These selfish Twats are probably used to going abroad and doing what they like in the Aires (sorry I have no experience of Aires just what I have read about)Now its difficult and worrying to go abroad they are probably thinking they can do what they like where they like on a staycation.Council Car Parks CANT be treated like a campsite. It rubs locals up the wrong way and gives genuine Motorhomers/Campervan owners a bad name.
I havent used our Campervan since last October due to Swmbo being frightened to leave our Home (thanx China and Thanx our Government)But since lockdown released I have seen untold numbers of Motorhomes passing where I live on the way to Skegness. Its only been a few months so why the rush to get camping and abusing the Council Car Parks. Its as if people have been locked up for years.Slow take take it easy NO RUSH!

It’s very disappointing that this does not seem to have worked out. I’ve stayed there and it was a great place to stay and visit a lovely little town.
Perhaps when such schemes are started rules should be posted to make it clear that the sort of behaviour described is unacceptable. If only motorhome users could just use their vans parked and not spread out with furniture, awnings, fires, barbecues and generators then I think most of the objections to their presence would disappear.
Let’s hope for a better outcome to the Forestry Commission trial, they do have some rules set out.

The rules for aires and the like are clear and well observed in the main.

You are permitted to park and stay for a defined maximum period.

You are not permitted to camp. As soon as you put anything outside the vehicle you are camping.

This same rule should apply in Helmsley and similar situations. Guidance rules on a notice would remove any ambiguity and permit an official to advise and possibly to fine.

When I visited Helmsley for the first time I met a council employee checking on the site and asking motorhomers what they thought of the idea and she said the council were considering expanding the scheme to more towns, including Pickering. I've been back a few times since and have only ever seen considerate motorhomers parked up at the back of the overflow car park. I did meet one person who got a ticket for taking up two spaces in the centre line, but he had it revoked on appeal. So sad to see one of the few places where you can legitimately park in the town centre gone.☹

Absolutely spot on, that’s exactly what’s required clearly defined rules that are adhered to. The problem here probably stems from the fact that due to other suitable spots in this area not being available, this draws to many at times here. We need more places to stop over to avoid this very scenario, but sadly I suspect that this place will join the list of places were are not welcome at, yet again punishing those who enjoyed this spot over the years, and did so properly with consideration.

I think there is a council meeting about its future this morning. It was closed off for covid restrictions and hasn't been reopened. So maybe not all lost yet.
This was all gleaned from Facebook so could well be a load of old tosh.
None of that is any excuse for what I saw yesterday.

Quiet countryside spots expand too quickly 1 motorhome in all in without a care for anyone - with height barriers going in and restricting of entrances - is how they are stopping everyone - and that is not including the rubbish that is left - cant really blame the local authorities for the restrictive measures

Most campers keep areas clean and remove their rubbish but still the minority spoil it

The size of Helmsley only justifies one warden visiting once or twice a day, so no regular control.

Sorry I have seen the warden every time we have stayed at Hemsley 4 times over the last couple of years, being on a weekend. On each Occasion exactly at 9am the Parking Warden would arrive and those without the ticket for the day would panic and be caught out.We had already purchased the ticket required.

It will be sad if the Local Council rethinks and stops the overnight stopovers situation.

Without being a Killjoy maybe councils should have a system where anyone abusing the generous stopover in any council car parks by putting out tables and chairs like a campsite should get an instant fine maybe £50.00 (it would need signage maybe)if the Warden was to randomly pounce and catch these selfish twats in the act. Then those conforming would have no problem and those abusing would be hit in the pocket.Better than having barriers erected stopping everyone in a Motorhome.

As much as I agree Micky about what you are saying in urban car parks. I have seen cars taking out table and chairs then enjoying a meal in an urban carpark. Would we find them as well.
