Morning Biggles - welcome to the site. Any pics of your project if so we would love to see them.

hi, must say fantastic job. bet you are really proud of all your work. i know what its like to do . i converted a prison cell truck with a mate . more wites than a telephone exchange. but i think you have done a better job than we did .lots of thought and carefull planning i dare say on the hoof as well. very impressed .thats the way to do it. incredibly good .cheers alan.
bet he kept the compressor good for blowing up tyres etc .

One of the best selfbuilds I've seen, the paint job makes the whole van look more like a factory build (that must be a compliment)certainly makes my selfbuild look ordinary.

Hi Guys

Thanks ever so much :D I am very pleased with the outcome. Yes there was a lot of planning, and just as much on the hoof re-works. The principle objective was to be self sufficient for 4-5 days so we could wild camp. So I have an under slung 40 LPG tank, and 150L of water. The air tank was not moved form its original position under the mid offside. I hadn't thought of taking a tap off it for tyre inflation.

The paint job does make it. I can't take credit for that, but I did get to pay for it so in my book that counts.

So far on the odd few outings we have done it all seems to be working out as planned.

We hope to pop down to either France or Cornwall in the half term and give it a good test.

I could do with a better axle ratio and I am going to make and fit a towbar, and fit a cruise control. Anyone with info on axles or cruise controls would be useful to hear from.

I am also building a widebeam narrowboat. Widebeam Boat Build Blog

Edit to add, SWIMBO's primary demand was a fixed double. I have to say its my preference too so I made it so.

I am about to go down the self build route, and your build is inspirational!
If anyone has not seen the transformation, go and have a look.

A lot of people use a used caravan as a doner for parts. I discarded this early on as

1. A modern one will be silly expensive. IMO if you are going to the effort then why use an older model with older style fittings?
2. All the nice parts you will need such as cooker, toilet, fridge will all be used,
3. Buying new worked out cheaper in my case
4. If (when) I do it again i still would not use a caravan doner.

Good luck with the build. It will be fun and challenging but most of all satisfying especially when your van gets the thumbs up ;)

One word of warning though, it will take longer than you think, and it will cost more than you think. Join the SBMCC for lots of tips and support as well as club discounts.
