Hello and help please....

Hi, I have been looking at this website for months and it has been really helpful and inspiring for me and my partner. I have recently converted a LWB toyota hiace into a rudimentary camper we have a leisure battery, lights, a full size bed, a fridge, running water and a drive away awning..

We are setting off on our 'trip' in Sept we will be driving to Austria then down the Dalmation coast Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and H, Montenegro, Albania and then finally Greece where we will find a small property to rent over winter. Then we will come back via Italy and France...

I am having real trouble finding a decent insurer and breakdown cover for all these areas, any advice is greatly appreciated.

What Sat Nav would you recommend?
Any hints/ tips recommendations?
Insurance?
Breakdown cover?
My van is not actually classed as a Camper, do you see this as an issue?
How do I manage my road tax and MOT whilst away?

Thanks for reading I know that's a lot of questions...

Cheers!

Paul

Traveling

Hi paul-
Cannot answer all your questions but I have been researching Insurance as our policy is up for renewal and Safeguard offered unlimited travel in Europe also Saga (for over 50 year olds)
Don,t know how you would go on being not registered as a camper, both included breakdown in there quotes as standard.
We have a Garmin satnav it has European maps and takes Lat and Long numbers but it depends on how techie you would want to be.we have found this adequite for finding campsites and Aires etc.
I am sure there will be lots more members along soon to answer your questions.
Have a good trip
Sue

Thanks...

Cheers Sue, nice to meet you, much appreciated.

I have been getting quotes all day, Quite frustrating filling in the same form!!! It seems my van falls into a difficult category and what I think I need to do is put in a table/seating/cooking (we were gonna have a movable stove) and a wardrobe!? to Qualify for camper insurance... The cheapest commercial insurance I have got has been £800!!! OUCH!!!! Anybody got any help on this one???

Cheers again...

Paul and Samantha

Hi pablito and welcome,

If your MOT runs out while you are away then you may have a problem. People usually have an MOT done earlier than the due date in those circumstances.

As for Road Tax, you can always fill in the forms before you go and get somebody to renew it for you and post it on to wherever you are.

Road tax can be done online now.

But cant answer the MOT question.

Hi applecore,

The next time you are away, I will do your road tax online for you.:)

All I need is your debit/credit card and your Bank account details.:)

You can trust me, I am a Northerner.

Hi and welcome we did a conversion a few years back, it cost us £580 fully comp, used it for a season then sold it on...jack

Welcome to "wildcamping" and dont forget to take plenty of pics on your travels and blog them when you get back or if taking a lap top computer with you even better you can blog as you go.

Cheers!

Thanks for the hello's and the advice folks, Maingate - give me your account details and your password and I'll pop the cash in your account....:D

Getting a bit giddy now.....
