Apart from the following what else is a likely scenario?
Could have been oil pump failure, leading to oil starvation.
Could have been lack of oil leading to pump failure due to sudden
loss through large leak, then oil starvation.
Could have been oilway blockage.

I've known of a few experiments where a car has been drained of oil then
driven to see how long before seizure, averages out to be a few km.
So it's all about noticing the oil light/gauge in time and cutting the engine,
there's a small window of opportunity, if not running flat out at the time.
