Hand Brake cable 1998 Peugeot Boxer 2.5 diesel !

Ours is a medium wheel base not a short wheel base and is a straight 2.5 D not a TD, does that make a difference??
Engine size shouldn’t make a difference but wheel base will.
It looks like you need to speak to coastal motorhomes as the have a some in stock, or try emailing Autosleeper
The problem is down to as a commercial vehicle they weren’t very popular so after market spares is thin on the ground
Especially as it is mainly only motorhomes that are left on the roads now, so it is a very small market needing spares for them

If the motorhome is on an ALKO chassis then the handbrake cable is an ALKO part and NOT a Peugeot part that the majority of garages think it will be.

They are only available direct from ALKO ( staggeringly expensive ) or the only other option is to use a company that will make one up for you normally using the old one as a template which could not be done with mine because the dozy twonks at the garage had thrown the old one way.

I had this debacle back in 2012 when our motorhome failed on it`s 3rd MOT on handbrake performance.

The very well known and renowned local family garage i was using insisted it was a Peugeot part on mine having 30+ years working on motorhomes.

I told him in front of several customers he was talking out of his arse and was proved right, i never took my motorhome there ever again.

See post #44 in the following thread

Haven’t done a web search but I’m certain there are numerous companies that can make new, modify existing cables.
Yes just send them the old one they'll make a new one used the service often

I had one made from a company I was told about on here, you send them the cable and they make one and it was very reasonable, cannot remember name of the firm at the moment but it must be on one of my old threads. if stuck I can search when I have more time in my emails.

Would definitely be looking at getting a bespoke cable made up if only options are expensive parts. I used to use Venhills for all my clutch and brake stuff on bikes and trikes. Not sure if they will have suitable bits for vans but worth asking if stuck: https://www.venhill.co.uk/

I will be surprised if Speedy can’t sort you out as already suggested though

Speedy have been back in touch and there are two options.

They can alter the length of the (too long) inner cable and make a new nipple for it for a cost of £35, or they can make a whole new cable for £130, both plus VAT. Looks like altering an existing cable is the way to go - the garage apparently have 2 suitable cables already in their possession, but they are 200mm too long. Just have to retrieve the cables from the garage.... I'm sending Neil out the door to do this as I type... 😂:devilish::cool:

The garage have also muttered that they might be able to alter the cable(s) themselves if necessary (without me asking, shock horror!), but I think they are reluctant to do this as not only are they always up to their eyeballs in work (they haven't said that as a reason, but it's an incredibly busy garage all year round) but a lot will depend on the staff and who is actually capable of doing what and how busy they are with other stuff.

PS. Coastal Motorhomes have been good too, they got back straight away with a link to what they thought was the right cable on their website, but it isn't, so it will have to be the Speedy Cables route.

If ye were closer I could have altered it for you, I have a venhill kit here, as long as whoever is doing it turns the ends of the cable back into the nipple then solders in place it will be good to go. The reason the ends are turned back is when pressure is applied it cant pull the double thickness through the hole in the nipple, soldering is not strong enough on its own.

Every thing we posted to them next day post, They made them the day they received them and posted back next day post. But I'd send them the old one to copy even if altering a new cable not rely on measurements
Sending the orignal makes sense, but would you also ask them to knock a few mm off due to original cable stretching over the years if they were doing a copy?

It's only a handbrake cable at the end of the day {tin hat on awaiting the flak... :devilish: ;) }

I always leave a vehicle parked in gear anyway.
It's the automatic result of driving many old bangers over the years 😂
this is the thing ... it is NOT a handbrake cable as far as the DVSA are concerned for MOT purposes, it is an EMERGENCY Brake cable, and for that purpose it has to be blooming good.
And it also needs to be the right length to apply fully as well as release fully (I think it was my Renault Master that failed its first MOT on the handbrake (opps, Emergency brake) by 1% off permitted efficiency. Quite frustrating as you can imagine. Dealer adjusted it for free but still inconvenient).
