I was there recently.

I didn't bother with the visitors centre though, the prices are extortionate!
Its well worth becoming a National Trust member for Stonehenge. As a family entry would cost you about half the price of a years membership ! I have been a NT member for years - and it always works out good value for money as NT places are ideal, especially for those rainy days on the road and they are very good with kids now as well and make old buildings / mansions/ houses interesting and exciting for them with kids trails and spotting sheets. :) Both English Heritage and NT membership gets you in free - but if you have to choose one, NT is the way better option IMO!

I am a NT member Melissa but I didn't know that you could get into the visitor centre at Stonehenge free with this!

I'm a bit loath to use it though as I believe that Stonehenge was donated to English Heritage on the proviso that they never charged for visiting the stones. I could be wrong though?

Either gets free entry - or at least thats certainly how it was two years ago. I think NT own the land around it and EH the stones or vice versa?

There are stories of how many years ago the once owner left them in trust to the people of Britian to visit and i think he had said there was not to be a cost involved - so much for his wish! That could be an urban myth though!

Defo still free to NT - just foudn this:

"National Trust members can visit for free but must show their membership card upon arrival and before ordering tickets. SatNav: Parking at the English Heritage visitor centre can be found at postcode SP4 7DE."

we went to the visitor centre a couple of years ago . if i'd paid to get in ,i'd have been furious -it was awful
I thought it wasn't bad - very tech heavy now and lots of interactivey stuff I seem to recall - however I was annoyed as the bit outside that was supposed to demonstrate how they used logs to roll the stones along, wasn't working - I hate it when stuff doesn't work at these places! Stonehenge has come a long way since its small parking lot for about 20 cars around 30 years ago. I seem to recall the car park now is really quite large and when I visited was almost full!

Still the visitor centre does not seem to be a fair reflection on the extortionate cost to get in! Think its about £20 for an adult?! I suspect that EH and NT split the entry costs and Stonehenge is both of their cash cows!

I once got escorted off the site as I stepped over the rope boundary as I wanted to touch them! lol Just one of a mini series of adventures in my misspent youth ;)

Have heard that too, even been told they can't stop you visiting the stones and can only charge for the centre and lift to the stones. Again no idea if any of that is correct.
Still can get pretty close on the public footpath from the by way and it's a great view from The Avenue footpath too, which leads to Woodhenge.

ive never actually visited stonehenge though i drive by quite often, wife visited a lot when a child and her dad was in the army stationed nearby, neither of us see the point of going now, when theres avebury and stanton drew not far away where you can touch the stones and less crowds..... not even finding out we can do stonehenge free as nt members has made any difference;)

We went to the visitors centre ages ago free with NT, never would have paid the money they charge. I thought it was quite interesting, but I don't think it's sympathetic to the site if that makes any sense.

when i went half the exhibits were missing and what was there were mainly copies . my suggestion of giving the stones a couple of coats of Bright White Dulux Weathershield , to protect them and make them stand out more for people who couldn't afford the entrance fee and could only look at them longingly from the Drove, fell on deaf ears

I've often thought there must be enough spare NATO Green in the area to cover up the blooming eyesore. :p:)

If you just turn up rather than pre booking it is £25:10 for an adult, if you tell them you don’t want to donate then it drops to £22:80. Unbelievable costs and puts it out of the reach of many.
Of course if you are feeling flush you can pay £47 to get 30 minutes inside the circle and 30 minutes outside.
I am just surprised staff don’t have to wear masks and carry pistol as it is robbery.
