Grampa rights renewal at 70

I've just read the entire Medical Report and right now I would fly it, but anything can happen in the next 21 months!:scared:
John

Exactly ,fingers crossed !! but I suppose if anything nasty was to happen your licence would probably be the last thing on your mind

No to medical but you must get it weighed I have PM,d a weighbridge list with all the additions you have made you could be overweight when going on holiday.

Alf

hi - I have looked at my log book and MOT documents and there is no weight to be found. David.. where is this plate you mention ? Where should I look for it ? My van was imported from Japan in the summer of last year and clearly was not weighed on import. It is a small van, just fitting into one parking bay, so nowhere near as large as many on here......

if it is less than 3.5tonnes... do I need to be even worrying about medicals ?

Thanfully i don't have to worry about all this for another 18 years. My understanding is you can reapply for your licence up to 3 months before your birthday with the relevant medical tis in boxes should you wish to retain grandfather rights.

There are a couple of points to consider.

Firstly renewal is not Automatic, should you not go through with the process you will be limited to 3500 kgs.

Secondly and importanty if you dont renew the 7500 kgs category you cannot reinstate the classes in the after event so it is important you are organised.

What I don't know and no one has mentioned is if you dont renew your entitlement a licence is /was issued to that of someone who passed their test post 1997. However the rules changed again in January 2013 so do you receive the latest licence ?

The difference from what i can glean is both licences allow a max of 3500 kgs. However post 97 the gtw of the vehicle could be 5500 kgs albeit at 3500kgs you were ok ...latest regs stipulate that the gtw cannot exceed 3500 kgs.

so has an example a land rover with a kerbweight of 2000 kgs and potential trailer weight of 3500 kgs therefore 5500 you are ok on a post 97 licence provided any trailer is no more than 1500 kgs to keep legal ...It is my understanding from January 2013 the gtw cannot exceed 3500 kgs therefore the scenario i give would be illegal... https://www.gov.uk/guidance/changes-to-the-driving-licence-and-categories

Is it a Bongo, if yes if you get it up to 3.5 tonnes you are very much overloaded. Maximum Authorised Mass: 2280 Kg

No it's not a Bingo it's a

Quoted from that document:

"When do you need a D4
• If this is your first application for a Group 2 licence. This includes small and medium sized lorries, full sized lorries, buses and minibuses.
• If you are applying to renew your Group 2 entitlement at 45. From 45 on, a D4 will be needed every 5 years until you are 65 when it will be needed every year."

Peter

Scan down that list - the very last statement is that you will need to submit a D4 form every THREE years. I think the confusion arises because we are talking here about C1 (between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes and no more than 8 passengers) and Group 2 also includes minibuses etc which can carry up to 16 passengers (category D). There are many motorhome drivers over the age of 45 and they haven't been required to renew every five years - that requirement applies to category D drivers.

If you still have doubts, then I suggest you contact DVLA and ask them.

Unless with the alterations plus converting to a under slung gas tank has increased her weight

Thanks everyone..... I think I need to go get it weighed as although its registered as a Delica it does not look like any other delica i have ever seen (except one which is now in south America) nor is there one on the mit. uk owners club website which I have looked at many times. ..... I think all delicas are based on a Mitsubishi 2.5 diesel truck chassis but in addition mine has a german habitation box and only a few hundred were made, so its a bit of an odd ball. It was first registered in 1993 If DVLA don't know its weight ....... how would they know if I was breaking the law ? (not that I want to be unsafe of course). There is almost no info at all on the log book.

I'll tootle off and get it weighed one day when i have empty tanks. There is a weighbridge not far for £4 !! Thanks Alf....

Once I know the weight then I can think about licenses....

Found the local recycling center would weigh my van for free providing I didn't want a printout, they just jotted down the figures on a scrap of paper.

After reading through the D4 document it looks like I made the right decision to sell my van. Although I consider myself ok to drive I had a triple by-pass about 12 years ago, also have problems walking due to spinal degeneration. The form doesn't really give any indication as to how they would treat the replies the doctor has entered, they seem to be a simple yes/no & dates. If the worst happens & you 'fail' the medical do you only lose the C1 category or can you lose the right to drive altogether.
My last van was a Rapido A class that they sold plated at 3.5t, the original owner paid the extra to get the option of having it plated to 3.7t then shortly after paid SVTECH to uprate it to 3.85t. All of this was just a paper exercise no mods were made to the van, without the uprated weight the van would be overladen except if it was driven just by the driver & nothing in the van. If I wasn't medically fit to drive the van plated at 3.85t & I downplated to 3.5t why am I all of a sudden ok to drive it albeit overloaded, it's the same van or is the extra 350kg going to make that much difference. Many motorhomes on the road are probably overloaded with having this 3.5t limit, a more realistic figure would be 4.0t.
