gps locations for wild camping

Might sound like a daft question but does this site have a list of locations with gps coordinates. I tend to save mine on my sat nav and it would be great to compile a category with others.

For what it's worth I rate mine in the following categories
1. ok if you are stuck and tired
2. nice enough
3. be sure to come back

Yes a good idea if we all put our places together to gather a wild camping list would be cool.Any thoughts anyone else?

You would have to setup a database and have webpages for saving the details into the database and retrieving them back out again. The principle and the execution is in fact very simple something I code and do myself within my own work using asp.net,

But the problem is that it would have to be 'hosted' which costs money and would require time administering.

If anyone is aware of a free database hosting service then its something I could certainly look at developing :)

I have found that some locations listed no longer sell AUTOGAS. It pays to phone first. Got caught at Christmas with the one listed for Newton Aycliffe they aparently have not sold it for 4 years (the lady I spoke to on the phone didn't know this, we arrived to be given the news) but are still listed. The listing for one in Darlington redirects to The Calor Centre in Bishop Auckland.

Tibshelf and Woodall now sell Autogas.

I am a 'newbie' here, having bought my first motorhome, a 1999 Autostratus, last November.

I have yet to try wilding - in fact I've only used the van once so far.

It needed, and still needs, a bit of work and that came to a halt with the snow and cold weather. The van is on-street parked too since we have no driveway.

Anyway -cutting to the chase - to pass those idle hours, I've spent the past couple of weeks going through every posting on the England, Scotland, Wales and Pub Stopover forums (fora, actually).

I've used Google Earth, Memory Map OS software and a bit of nous to create a POI file categorising all the places mentioned that appear to be useable.

The categories I've created are:

Car park urban
Car park rural
Layby urban
Layby rural
Other urban (those that don't fit the above categories)
Other rural (ditto)
Pub stopover

Having done this for my own use, and intending to keep it up-to-date from future postings, should this be made freely available? And if so, how?

Comments and suggestions please ...

PS Google allows shared data areas for free, I believe. Google Docs ...

Only problem I see with this is keeping access to the information limited to members. There are quite a number of spots I've recommended on this site which are "tolerated" as their use is limited to perhaps one or two vans at a time.
I can well imagine that an invasion of half a dozen would guarantee their closures.

What a great task you have completed. Are your POI's for Tom Tom or a different sat nav as there are different types for each? One way of controling your list would be to send it in a zipped file via email enableing you to check each and every request.

I don't think that the information should be made too freely available precisely because sites should not be overwhelmed.

At the moment to find this information you need to know about Wildcamping, and take some time and effort finding the information in the appropriate forum.

I think supply via site admin might be the answer, so there's a degree of control, or through a private section of the site that is (possibly) subscription/donation controlled.

I am happy to act as a focal point for receipt of information and updating information. This information could also be privately disclosed, if it's felt there's a risk of putting such information into the public domain.

Perhaps such a database could be hosted on here. Perhaps it could be just made available to Senior members or just members.

Motorhome Facts (can I say that on here without risk of being bashed up?) have one but its mainly full of crappy campsites but something similar on here just with wild spots or aires etc would be good as well as good places to get water, empty loos etc. GPS co-ordniates are a must though and most of mine I just know where they are so it would be difficult to get the co-ordinates unless I can google earth them. Photos would be good as well

Ideally we should be able to go in and say find me all the wildcamping spots in Devon. Or even to put a town name in and find all spots within 20 miles.

A comments bit would be good for peoples reviews of the listed site or for any changes that may have happened since a spot was posted.

Get on with it someone!

Wow

Wow, what a fantastic effort you've made and you are willing to share with fellow wilders.

Thanks for all the hard work.

I'm sure you will be very popular :D :p

I started writing down satnav coordinates for wilding sites, only to find out that there is a difference on google earth (I paid nearly £10 as well for the satnav). Seriously, can people do a check of their satnav coordinates with google earth to see if this is usually the case.

My Garmin gives readings N and W. Google is OK for the North reading but the W is - if you are west of the meridien.

Garmin N54.2222 Google N54.2222
Garmin W01.2222 Google -1.2222

If you use a POI converter from TOM TOM or other formats to Garmin it puts the coordinates in correctly.

Good point nomad, I had not noticed that until you pointed it out.

That is not fair.

Members will just post loads of nonsense postings until they become a member or senior member.

Mind you, some members only :Dever post nonsense anyway. Don`t they AJ.

I don't understand why such a data base should only be available for senior members when I thought this site was to bring like minded people together and help one another out.

I don't think that suggestion has been made.

It's just that perhaps some degree of control might be seen to be in everyone's best interests.

I've just been discussing, privately, the original suggestion of Gps data being made available generally with an executive of an organisation which "tolerates" the use of their land for wild camping. His reply was, "if this begins to happen you will find our gates will be locked"

I think one of my suggestions was that the database was only available to Senior members but I made this point in reply to somebody suggesting that it shouldnt be too easily available or broadcast on the internet in case places got overrun. I dont have an issue sharing wild spots to be honest as i think we are in a minority and most people with motorhomes still prefer to be on a campsite. I reckon if we are all sensible and dont overcrowd places then there shouldnt be a problem with sharing this info. Perhaps if the database got off the ground there could be field for a recommendation for advisable number of vans on spot. One or two vans in a forest car park or beach is not going to cause too much concern but ten might. Personally I would drive off and find somewhere else if I thought a place was overcrowded or likely to cause problems or a visit from some authority.

The difficulty is restricting this distribution. Think of the lifting of an injunction protecting some footballer's "reputation". One reason given was that the information was already being distributed freely and, in the case of a database, it would be hard to prevent sites being passed on out of friendship.
You or I might well move on, but the locals would still be counting the total traffic.
