Indeed the debate centred around it being called the Union Jack ....flown from the jackstaff of a boat ....but Union Jack is acceptable in common English today ...summat likevthat

No, it is the right way up. The wide white bands should be at the top on the side of the pole.
People seem to think it is the left or the right, but that's daft: depends which way the wind is blowing!

Upside down is not a mistake: it is a distress signal.
