Over many years we have found being able to see spots on GE prior to leaving the house to be of huge benefit. Now the POI set is an app can we still do this as if not it's a massive blow TBH

Yes, using the Location App (and using Google Maps satellite view and Google Street View) or by downloading the zipped files, which include a set for Google Earth.

Yes, the POI Downloads are still there so download and install on Google Earth as before, the Location App is separate feature.

You can still download the KML files for Great Britain, France and Iberia.
You can also use the app with Google maps on your computer.
