Hi, Does anybody know if Google Earth works off line on the laptop or does it need internet access, Cheers
 
Just a thought, I suppose Google Earth for the POI`s is the best one for for windows, I like google maps but hate google earth
 
I can't get Google Earth to work off line properly. It does work but only a limited clarity, can't zoom in too closely as I think it only holds a limited cache in it's off line form.
 
I found that it is OK but as you try and zoom in it goes, as it needs the internet to get the details that are not in the memory. Only the basic information is held so the answer is yes you need a connection, I was going to get a dongle but you have to use the amount up as it is time limited.

Apparenty Google Earth PRO, is much better and it is free at the moment
 
navigating with new tablets

some very new tablets (eg asus) have some form of satellite tracker inbuilt so if you establish location in wi fi on google maps, when you drive off the blue location dot follows everywhere......so you can navigate your route, especially if you have a passenger who can read the moving map.........some of these tablets also have additional (to wi fi) terrestrial tv antennas too which activate when you are seeking a web site live tv channel.........steve bristol
 
If it's only the maps you need off line I've recently upgraded to Windows 10 (it was free) and they do a free download of all world maps country by country, no satellite or street views but good road maps. Just make sure if you do that you're on unlimited or free internet connection as it uses a lot to download.

What are the maps to download called?
 
On Windows 10 you just go into "settings" then "system" and there's a tab saying offline maps, click on it and it then just comes up with a list of every country, you choose which ones you want and download as many as you like.
The map program/system doesn't have a name so I assume it's a Windows 10 only system, have only recently started using it but all seems great.
Don't think it will work with earlier Windows systems ?
 
I have Maps.Me on my iPad. All western, southern and Eastern European maps. A whole load of POIs/bookmarks (WC, ACSI, LPG, Archie's, places we've been or might visit plus loads more). It takes up 10.4GB !! On my iPhone just 8.4GB as I don't have as many bookmarks.

I don't know all the ins and outs but I kept an eye on my hard drive storage system and so far the maps haven't used up that much space ?
Could Windows 10 system be compressing the files after downloading them ?
 
Have just tried it, no problems, zooms in just as well as Google, Paris, Madrid and all big cities maps really close details. I found if you haven't downloaded the specific country it won't zoom in properly and only shows the main routes, once downloaded they are great.
