The problem is not just spotting the sign but then finding an alternative route. When I was using a Garmin car satnav in the moho, I had a problem in one French town (Biganos, IIRC), where a diversion request resulted in a relatively long diversion that eventually took me back to the same low bridge (and again, and again...). I tried to force an alternative by just driving past, ignoring instructions for a bit, and was then directed to another low bridge (2.6m) on a major road in the town. It was repeatable over the years, but I soon learnt to put in a suitable waypoint to route me around it. I now use the CoPilot app with weight and dimensions input and have not encountered that issue. I have been informed on a couple of roads (one in Dumfries and the other in Lapradelle-Puilaurens) of low bridges ahead and urged to turn back. The former appeared to have been removed many years before and the latter was a rock overhang partway across the road; timber lorries and school buses regularly use the road and simply use the opposite side of the carriageway in the applicable direction - motorhomes do the same - much safer than following the satnav's instructions to take narrow streets (with no signed width limit) with no pavements and 90° bends.True Tom if you don't look at the signs when entering the road end, which is getting more and more difficult with the ever-increasing proliferation of signage of all types, and the councils not looking after the street furniture, allowing bushes etc to obscure the signs.
Having said that, how good are the sat navs at not guiding you down these roads?
