Hi
Can anybody advise how, where and approximate costs for doing the test to obtain category C1 97 on a full UK driving license ?

I live in Greater Manchester and feel sure there will be local options ... But internet searches haven't thrown anything obvious up !

Thanks ... Ian

There MUST be a way of getting the test for vehicle over 3500kgs without all the professional requirements for a big truck with all the CPC and ongoing bullshit they are required to do. Can you not get a driving test to put it on the Pink card licence??? There will be a LOT of bigger motorhomes going cheap soon when the oldies lose their medicals. That will not be good for the leisure industry surely.

If you passed your driving test before 1997 you will automatically have grandfather rights to drive up to a 7.5 tonne vehicle providing you are below 70 years old, after that you have to renew . If you passed your test after this date you cannot drive for reward ( working for a living ) any vehicle over 3.5 tonne, until you take the LGV test (HGV)

The EU and DVLA have been saying for over 2 years now they intend to have a separate recreational licence for over 3500kg vehicles. This would remove them from the "C" goods vehicle category. However as things stand you have to go through the same test as that for a driver intending to earn his living driving and know the rules. You are not now required to take the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and its associated 35 hours of training over a 5 year period.

There is no age limit to hold a C1 if you are fit enough. If you are not, it is time to consider if you are actually fit to drive!

At 73 I am about to have a further medical to renew my C1.

That would be a sensible move but when do THEY do sensible.. To drive a large recreational vehicle should then require a test on that vehicle type and that SHOULD not be too hard for somebody who has been driving one a little smaller at under 3500kgs. I just do not see the point of being tested on a full size lorry of 17tonne just for a bit over the limit of 3500kgs. I drove bigger vehicles when I was a BRS transport manager and that had NO RELATIONSHIP at all with my 'little 4 ton motorhome' completely different beasts. Unless there is going to be a change it will mean all the larger Hymers etc will be finished because they are a bit over the arbitrary limit. The younger people will not be bothered to get a big commercial vehicle licence just for that reason.
