We are heading off for our first holiday in Germany on the 14th September for approx 16 days. We are heading towards Wurzberg to do the Romantic road, down to Fussen. We then plan to head towards lake Constance and then onto the Black Forest. This is only roughed out in our heads at the moment, can anyone recommend places to see/go along our route and any nice parking spots along the way? All suggestions greatly recieved.

Yeah....eat loads of "Currywurst", "Flammkuchen", "Schweinebraten mit Knödel", "Kaiserschmarren", "Oabatzten", "Wurstsalat", and have liters of local beer, vine and Schnaps.

going through the Black Forest is the B500 Bundesstraße 500 (sorry only in german)

basically a nice mountain road straight through the black forest with plenty of nice stops like the Monastry in Alpirsbach (famous beer brewing monks!)
Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu -*Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu*- Das Bier aus dem Schwarzwald

or as already mentioned the Triberg Waterfalls Triberger Wasserfälle
plenty of lakes Titisee or Schluchsee

Black Forest is famous for Red Ham and Cake. We had some sitting at Triberg Waterfalls. Nice!

proposal, do a little detour to the east, the real heart of "Allgäu", away from romantic road, after 100 km the romantic road is "very romantic". You will be fed up.

Augsburg....center and the "Fuggerei", an old part of the town, made in the middle age by the rich Fugger family for the poor people

B17 down to Landsberg....nice center

Ammersee near Inning down to monastry "Kloster Andechs".....black beer "Andechser Doppelbock"....find a Stellplatz before:lol-053:

Hohenpeißenberg.....fantastic scenery on top of the hill, overlook the Alps...the best view at all

Wies.....Wieskirche, church, beautiful barock church

Ettelsbach with the bridge

Oberammergau.....house paintings "Lüftlmalerei" and the pub "Tini´s, bavarian music, right in center.

Ettal.....monastry with famous Ettaler Liqueur, nice souvenir,

Linderhof......a castle of the crazy king Ludwig, the Bavarian...absolutely worth to see, a diamond

route via Austria and Plansee (lake) back to Füssen

Füssen.....castle of the "crazy one"

panoramic road north edge of the Alps westerly to "Lake Constance", Bodensee.

Friedrichshafen.....Zeppelinmuseum of "Graf Zeppelin"

Thanks very much Guys for taking the time to reply. My appetite is well and truly wetted now!!
Really looking forward to this trip, we were supposed to go last year but were talked into taking a cruise instead and all the time we were both pining to be in the MH lol.

I shall start sticking more pins in the map tonight. I've also ordered the Bordatlas this afternoon to give us plenty more ideas for stops.

I heartily reccomend the romantic road. Start off at Wurzburg and park in the bus park across the water from the city for only a few euros. Wurzburg is a charming city. Pop into the Tourist info and get a stellplatz guide from their and follow the romantic road, there are stellplatz at nearly every town. Stop at Rottingen and for 5 euro park and get a 3 euro voucher to be used in some of the shops in the small town. Do the sundial walk around the town very interesting.
Rothenburg oder tauber is a charming town if a bit touristy but other towns like Dinkesbuhl and Nordlingen are worth a visit. There is a good stellplatz at Nordlingen.

I am agree that Lamsberg am Lech is a good town to visit with a stunning church. Just dont go there at a weekend as the carpark where the stell is is used for a local disco and gets very noisy from 2am till about 4 am..

A must in the Black forest is Triberg and if you stay overnight at Schonach a few km further up the road you can get a Knous carte which gives you free entry to the Triberg waterfalls and free public transport. There is motorhome parking at Triberg but not sure about overnight. Another must do is to go to the worlds largest cuckoo clock house between Triberg and Schonach worth the euro or so to gain entry to see inside the house.
If you can manage to get to Frieburg near the Black Forest it is worth it as when we were there in October it was over 20 degress and we were walking about in tshirts and shorts. It is is worth the long walk in to the city center to see the munster cathedral and the bell sounds a booming ring every friday at around 11am to commemorate the cruxifiction of christ. There is also a great daily market there.
As has been said have a curry wurst and some wonderful weissbeir and above all enjoy.
 
Thanks for the suggestion, I think Dresden may have to be saved for another trip a bit off our beaten track.

Can't wait to try these currywurst!!
 
Hiya, we've just got back from doing the Fussen to Wurzburg route :¬)

One thing I would mention is that we found it incredibly hard to pay by Credit Card for either shopping or a meal and ran out of cash !!! The supermarkets tended to be Netto, Lidl, Aldi etc who only take debit cards. In the small towns along the Romatic Road most of the restaurants wouldn't take a card at all.

Even if you are not particularly interested in old churches - it's worth looking in a few as they are all painted inside and absolutely stunning. Bad Wimpfen, just off the Romantic Road is worth a small detour, small but beautiful.

On the way back through France we did Wissembourg and Bitche (there is free parking at the top next to the citadel), which are from the AA 100 most beautiful towns in France guide.

Have fun ..... and I hope you have better weather than we did!

I have family in Wurzburg.
Germans do not have credit cards.
Maybe that's why they have the strongest economy in Europe and also they can get up in the morning.

It's been a long while since I lived in Germany but when I was there I had the impression many restaurants, bars and pubs (especially in small towns and villages, maybe not the same in the cities) are managed and run (inc staffed by family members) by their owners - i.e. - 3 generations all working in the family business.

I guess cash is cheaper for the business than paying the processing fees for cards.

Have fun on your trip - I am green with envy :cheers:

Oh, and as well as all the bratwursts, bockwursts, currywursts and pommes' try a donar kebab (gyros) - they are nothing like the rubbish that passes for the same in this country - in Germany they use real meat and much better seasonings!
